View Full Version : Desktop fails at boot W86se

May 18th 04, 11:07 PM
Hi
On power on, sytem appears to boot normally untill the destop starts to
display.

Blue background displays, then tool bar at bottom of screen, then desktop
icons display,

Then background goes to white and IMAP error message displays 'Caused an
invalid page faoult in module
OLE32 at 017f:65f4727 ...

When the error message is closed it is replaced by MMTASK, page fault in
OLE32 at same address

Close this, get NISUM same fault at same address
Close this , get EXPLORER same fault at same address

Close this , get Active desktop recovery message and EXPLORER same fault
message.

Close this, desktop goes back to blue background and EXPLORER fault comes up
again.

Subsequent closing of the EXPLORER error just loops back to Explorer message
again.

I have carried out a virus scan of the drive over the network from another
PC, nothing found.

Any pointers?

Thanks
Ian F

It is a process, first doing a clean boot, then slowly re-enabling items till the
problem returns....but it is the best way to narrow it down. Post back when you get
near the cause.

I've never seen so many error messages one-after-another!

Sounds like 98 needs reinstalling

Well - I spent a fair part of the weekend building up from a clean boot,
'narrowed' the problem to somewhere in the start up files.

Frustration really set in when I found that there was some inconsistency
with System Check, Pointer, and SBOELoader. OK with first two, but add
SBOE... and desktop crash returns. However unticking SBOE.... does not
cure, and it is not untill I untick the other two that boot will complete.
And even further, the System Configuration Utility screen would freeze, and
I was not able to get to reboot from there on occasion.

So - as my drive is getting a bit crowded, and the price of 120gb drives is
not so bad now, I'm going to take the 'chicken' route, cure will be new
drive and reinstall.

Thanks for help, but my head is getting a bit sore from this brick wall.

Cheers
Ian F

I cannot find either System Check or SBOELoader in any compilation of =
startup apps, or anywhere else for that matter.

I suggest this procedure, before you give up and reinstall:

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available here:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check =
for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan =
your system, and remove what it finds.
Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and =
then remove the items in RED only.
SpyBot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=3Ddownload

Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe
Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, =
doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save =
Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My =
Documents, or similar).
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix =
anything yet.

Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these =
forums:
http://forums.net-integration.net/
http://computercops.biz/forums.html
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=3D30
http://tomcoyote.org/forums/
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com=20
http://boards.cexx.org/

The folks there will tell you what to remove.

A tutorial for using Hijack This is located here:
http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/
and an in-depth tutorial is here:

OK, you apparently have SBOELoader un-checked in msconfig, so it is not =
appearing in the Hijack This log....consequently, the folks in the forum =
cannot see any reference to it there.

Click Start> Run> msconfig, recheck the unchecked items and click OK, =
but do NOT reboot when prompted. Run Hijack This and save the log, then =
run msconfig again and uncheck the items you need to, in order to boot =
up. That way the entries should appear in the log, and you will have =
disabled them following that so you can boot successfully.

Post the new log to that thread in the net-integration forum.

You should also "fix" the other entries that T-Zero mentioned.

Glad you got it fixed. Please note that the reason I told you to replace the check
mark for the unticked items in msconfig so that they would appear in your Hijack
log, and then untick them again, is because you stated that you were having problems
getting Windows to load when the items remained ticked (or so I understood). For
the purpose of removing the malware, the items would have to be re-ticked for
complete removal, as T-Zero properly noted.

Looking at your later logs in that forum, it seems you had a number of unwanted
baddies, and T-Zero's closing advice should certainly be followed. Good luck!

Pleased to report that things are now running better than before. Seems that
I have picked up some malware that was stuffing things up.

Thanks to Glee (on this news group) and T-Zero (forums.net-integration.net)

I still need a larger drive, although some of the reasons have now partly
eroded :)
