View Full Version : Start button

Trying to help a friend out who has Win98 SE. For some
reason yet unknown the start button is gone. The task bar
is still there. BUt programs that are reduced to the task
bar won't open again from that location.

I'm not a complete idiot when working with windows, but I
know no way to remove the start button period. I'm
guessing that it may have something to do with a virus
but I can't for the life of me figure out what virus
might cause this. I hate to even think it but it looks
like an fdisk is in order. If we have to we will, but
does anyone else have any ideas?

Can you do WIN+E (WIN = That's the little key that has/may have Start and
or a Windows flag on it) ? Or try CTRL+ESC ? Does the menu pop up?

If it can pop up, try also WIN+R , then type SFC for System File Checker ,
you may want to have your 98SE installation file handy so that it can
extract the needed files, unless such can be found in [
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs ].

We've tried several ways to get the menu to open with no
success. Is there another way to get into the SFC? I'd
like to run that.
