During a recent virus scan, I received the following
message:

C:\windows win386.swp
Access denied! Error during file opening! This is a
windows swap file. This file is locked by windows. Error
code etc etc.

Should this be locked? Or do I need to do something to
enable it to scan?

C:\windows\win386.swp is your swap file, part of the virtual memory.
Sometimes you can gain some space by deleting it. Not to worry it will be
regenerated when you reboot, possibly at a lower size. As you use your
comp it will grow and shrink as needed. Often when I boot to my DOS menu,
for games and whatnot, that is one file I delete.
