at some point, I lost lost the ability to use notepad and
wordpad. this makes it difficult to read some important
information, does anybody know where I can get a copy of
it? I don't have an actual Windows disk, just some sort
of restore thing. thanks in advance

Can you do a Find, to see if the EXEs are still on your comp? The
locations should be:

C:\Windows\Notepad.exe
C:\Program Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe

Another text editor, though you may or may not be able to print from it is
EDIT, just type EDIT at the Run Dialogue.

start
find
files or folders
named "*.cab"

If you get a lot of files with almost consecutive names in one folder (eg
driver15, driver16, driver17) record that folder name
start
settings
conntrol panel
add remove programs
windows setup
accessories
and reinstall the accessories, pointing the browse function to the folder
found before

If there isnt a folder full of windows Cab files I have no idea

According to FileInfo, Notepad.exe is in WIN98_41.CAB

Try this:

1. Insert the Windows CD-ROM (or, if you have setup folder on disk (In
Windows 98 it's named Win98.), skip this step)
2. Start > Find > Files or Folders
3. Choose the CD-ROM drive or the folder where are placed the setup CABs
4. Instert "notepad.exe" (without ") and search

See the results. Should appear a CAB file - open it. If are more, open
them all. Now, search Notepad.exe. When you find it, copy it to the
windows directory (Start > Run and insert "%windir%" (without "))

This is possible because the CAB and ZIP files have ASCII "Tables of
Contents".

Note: In my Win98, I find "notepad.exe" in Win98_40.cab, in Win98 folder
of CD-ROM. I don't know what is the Write executable filename, but I
found a file called "write.exe" in the same CAB.

With write.exe, you can install it from Add/Remove Programs.

>Greg; do a search first to see if you can find your
notepad or wordpad in another folder where you can run a
shortcut to it. If you cannot find either application on
your computer somewhere, then try using your Windows
restore disc and browse the CD for the two applications.
If they are on it, you can reinstall them to your computer
from the recovery/restore disc.

It should be in C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE.
