slow very very slow

Hello you are my last hope. I hope that you can help me, I
use windows 98 on 40gb 126mb pc and I have a number of
problems I cant seem to solve,
1) My maintenance wizard cant complete its action it
will reach 100% files scanned and will stop and wont
complete the action
2) My pc is very slow to start. It takes ages
3) It sometimes wont shot done
4) It will sometimes block me from connecting to the
net
5) I have both yahoo +msn messenger on my pc (not on
start up menu)
6) On start up I have Norton anti virus, hotkey, zone
alarm, secure delivery, Norton internet security, task
scheduler, volume, and Symantec product updates
7) Hope you'll be able to suggest line of action

Spyware/scumware/adware are causing numerous system problems. I recommend
you download and use the following programs and consider removing everything
these programs identify. Be aware that there are frequent updates to these
programs and you need to check for them before every use.

You may have a bunch of programs starting on boot that don't have to be. On
my PC, if a program isn't used during each computing session, I don't start
it on boot.

To cut back on the number of programs starting at boot, check the programs
themselves for an option not to load. You might have to double click an
icon in the tray (others might require a right click) and then look for
preferences or options. If you cannot find an option, look for the program
in the following start up points and remove the reference to it:

Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini
and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe):

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

There is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage:

You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by
doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might
be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program
and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry
in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again
after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the
program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check here:

You can get to the boot menu by holding down the ctrl key after the memory
count occurs. Select a logged boot and this creates a bootlog of what goes
on during the boot process. This program will help you analyze the bootlog:

How many partitions? You may want to get more RAM. I've got 380 on my
Compaq Presario 5304 and unless I get a new MOBO, or new PC can't get
beyond that.

Well, just because it is a multi-tasking OS, doesn't mean you should. For
instance when doing defrag, it will be better as far as not as many apps
running if you do it in safe mode., but in any case turn off the screen
saver.

Your answer/problem lies in number 6. The more apps you have starting up
at the beginning, the longer it will take to start.

If it won't shut down you may have too many apps running, a program writing
to disk.

Either modem, or firewall settings might be at play.

That's good, but if their icon is in the taskbar, they are loaded at
startup.

Eliminate from starting up, those applications/services that you won't
need. Also you may have resource/software conflicts.

Are you using Microsoft Office? If yes what version?

What is the name of your maintenance wizard?

How large is your swap file in use? I suggest you run System Monitor. =
Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Monitor. Select Edit, =
Add Item, click on Kernel ( Category ) and select Memory Manager ( =
Category ) select items Swap file in use and Unused physical memory. =
Select View, Line Charts and View, Tool Bar and Status Bar. Create a log =
starting before you expect the problem and leave it running minimised =
and then look at it later. If you are generating significant Swap file =
in use figures ( not Swap file size ) it is indicative that additional =
RAM memory may help.=20

Try deleting your cookies.

- Try to find applications that may be disabled during boot, using
"Startup Control Panel", avaible at
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml. (You can use only MSCONFIG (Start

Find a messenger that can be used both for MSN and Yahoo!, to replace
the MSN and Yahoo! messengers. It's only one program instead of two
using RAM!

- Norton Internet Security does not include also a firewall? If yes, why
do you use Zone Alarm? You only need one firewall.
- Have you scheduled any task? If you don't have, go to My Computer >
Tasks and find in the menus (should be in a menu called "Advanced") an
option for deactivating the task scheduler.
- What is "Symantec Product Updates"? A automatic updater? If yes, why
do you not update manually the products when you need? The automatic
updaters are activated when you aren't using them!

By coincidence, this Friday, I've upgraded my machine to 128 MBs RAM,
and I use Win98 with a 4GB Western Digital and a 40 GBs Seagate
Barracuda 7200.7!

What is your processor?

Possible solutions:
1) Update your virus scanner
2) Try msconfig (Start > Run > msconfig > Click on the
startup tab and disable the stuff you don't want here).
3) Delete everything you don't need from the Startup
folder on the Windows Start Menu > Programs.
4) Get Lavasoft Ad-aware (www.lavasoft.de)

Sorry but in my view your advice regarding "Symantec Product Updates" is =
of doubtful value. Out on the internet there is a war going on. The =
Symantec Live Update facility provides a minor irritant i.e. a brief =
interruption. It does not significantly contribute to poor system =
performance. On the other hand a viral infection will cause untold =
grief. The updates are being issued now on a daily basis and any failure =
by a user to update can result not only with major problems for the user =
but can mean that the rest of us, who may have had only a passing =
contact, get bombarded with even more spam and virus bearing messages.

Out of curiosity have you used the Symantec Automatic Live Update =
service recently? I do every day!

Your thought is correct.

I saw that because if I install any Symantec product, I deactive its
"Automatic Updating" tools. But I do that because I've a dial-up
Internet Connection, and I connect only once a week to the Internet. But
if I had an ADSL connection, I would activate "Automatic Updaters".

And, if I install any Symantec Product, I will update it manually every
time I connect to the Internet. (I don't have any Symantec Product
installed.)
