I replaced the mainboard in a win98 SE system. Removed all
devices in safe mode then installed all the new devices.
Sound card is showing all OK in the crtl pnl but no device
is listed in multimedia. Sound/volume control is greyed
out also. The correct driver is installed and chipset is
OK. Realtek AC97 onboard.
Thanks

I'm having the exact same problems, I reinstalled windows,
and I have no sound, can't open volume control, device
manager says I have the rigth driver installed, and the
multimedia option in the cotnrol panel says no playback
device.

I too have just run into this problem, however, I'll add a
twist, I did nothing to my computer, my sound was working
fine, I went to bed, left the computer on, and when I woke
up inthe morning, the sound speaker Icon was gone and the
Playback option are greyed out. I have re-installed 98
and have even gone as far as replacing the sound card
completely. Any Ideas at all would be nice.

I have the solution to this problem. First open
Multimedia and click on the device tab, take note of the
name of your Sound Driver Device. Next open up Regedit
and search for sound mapper. Under sound mapper you will
have Playback, Record, Userplayback and Userrecord. In
all four of these locations type the name that was listed
in Device Tab of Multimedia exactly as it showed there.
Search for additional sound mapper locations and place the
same info in each of them. Then uninstall Mulitmedia in
add/remove programs under the windows setup tab, remove
the drivers for you soundcard in the system device manager
and refresh. This should reload the drivers, re-install
Multimedia in the Add/remove programs windows setup tab.
Reboot and tada you should have sound.
