I recently abandoned use of Windows XPHE, and installed a brand-new copy of
Windows98 SE I purchased. So, for the past couple of weeks, I've been
working on reloading data files, tweaking settings, etc. I've run into what
for me is a major snag in my intended use of my computer. I can't get any
sound to be produced, when I play MIDI files. This is bad, because it will
greatly improve the quality of my music if I can use MIDI in my
compositions.

I think I've just about run through the possible combinations of settings,
trying to get any program I have to produce sound output from a MIDI file.
Programs I've tried include Anvil Studio, Audacity v1_2_0-pre3, Winamp, &
Windows Media Player v7.

I'm using W98SE with a Midiman Delta 410 soundcard. I have playback set to
WavOut 1/2 Delta 410, on the "Audio" page of Multimedia properties. WAV &
MP3 files play fine. MIDI files make no sound, although the displays in the
programs indicate that they're playing the file(s) normally. (I've tried
several different MIDI files I have on hand, and none play.)

I don't find an option to use the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth, anywhere.
Shouldn't this be available as a default option in W98SE? I also don't see
an option for using the MIDI Mapper on the MIDI page of the Multimedia
Properties. Shouldn't it be there?

Anybody have any suggestions?
