I have Win 98SE with User profiles enabled. Recently, I have had problems
with the Profiles not working correctly. The most recent occasion was that
the PC has to all intents and purposes lost the profile of a particular
user. When you logon using the name and password of the user in question, it
is recognised but the PC does not pick up the user detail, it just reverts
to the default settings for desktop/start menu/programs etc.
I have checked the Registry and the data under Current User appears to be
intact as well as the Profile information under Windows/Profiles for the
user. When you select change user from the Start Menu it states the correct
user. I checked the .pwl's and although the profile had been used, the date
on the pwl file did not tie in with the recent access which to me means that
something is adrift between the profile name, the information and the
password. Renaming the pwl did not make any difference.
Any suggestions?

What is your logon in Control Panel, Network?
I do not get a "Change User" option in my Start menu.

I don't have a Network Logon, the logon is set to Microsoft Family Logon and
with that, when Start is selected, it lets you log off the current user,
stating the name of the current user.
I think I now have corrected the original problem. It appears the user
profile in question had a corrupted User.dat file. I found this by trawling
through the Registry using Registry Lite searching on user name and
user.dat. Eventually I found that the shell folder for the current user was
pointing to the default settings, not the profile settings. Luckily, having
previously backed up everything a few days before, I managed to replace the
current user.dat with the old user.dat from the backup and it worked.

Thank you for the feedback. I am unfamiliar with "Registry Lite" but glad
you caught the problem.
