Having difficulty getting a new External Hard Drive (AcomdData 80GB E-5
with PushButton Backup) to work properly.

After installation everything works like it should. However, when I
eject on the icon and later turn the Hard Drive back on the computer
freezes. CAD says msqsrv32 not responding. The only way to shut down is
turn the power off.

The only way to get the drive back is to shut down, boot in safe mode
and delete any reference to the drive. After I boot back up in normal
mode, the drive will install itself and everything is fine until I
click on the task bar eject icon again and later turn if back on.
Problem starts over.

Thanks for any help.

Msgsrv32 is not responding because it is waiting for the device to respond
and in itself is not the problem. See MS KB Q138708 - "Function of the
Windows 32-Bit Message Server" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=138708).

Did you install any special drivers when you purchased the external drive?
If so I would try uninstalling these drivers and then reinstalling them.
Alternatively, has the eject button ever worked with this drive? If yes
then I would suggest you use system restore and roll your system back to a
checkpoint created before the problem started although I would only do
this if the problem has started in the last week.

Thanks Mike,

This is a new Hard Drive. The only dirvers that came with it are for
WIN 98se. I have not installed them. Instructions said WIN ME had their
own drivers.

Eject has not worked properly for this drive since installation since
it freezes when I restart the hard drive. However, I have a card reader
and the eject works okay.

Win Me is up to date and no new drivers listed for USB 2.0

Not sure where to go from here.

Fine, so the device apparently needs nothing other than basic usb drivers
and these are included as part of Win Me. Note though that these are the
slow usb 1/1.1 rather than the faster usb 2.0. If you have a motherboard
with usb 2.0 or an add on card with usb 2.0 you will need to install the
necessary drivers from the manufacturer's web site otherwise the drive
will only be accessed using usb 1 and this could be the cause of the
problem.

It might be worth considering purchasing an add-on usb 2.0 card although I
see the AcomData web site does say the drive is compatible with usb 1.1
albeit access to the drive will be much slower - "This device is backward
compatible with USB 1.1. However, if you connect the device to a USB 1.1
port it will operate at USB 1.1 speeds (up to 12 Mbps).".

I'm sorry I don't really have anything else to suggest - I have little
experience of the use of an external usb drive with Win Me.
