Start-up Disk

[PAT (Paul)]

I wanted to make a Start-up disk from: start|Settings|Control
panel|add-remove|Start-Up Disk. I get the following message: ASPI2dos.sys
was not found, "Windows needs the disk labled 'window Millineum Edition to
continue'. This is an OEM and no disk came with it exept for the extra
programs to be downloaded, i.e. Lotus 123, etc.When "skip" to continue, the
same message for aspi4 and 8.
Tried an older floppy that goes back two years: same.
Something wrong in the Kingdom of Danemark...any help appreciated.

If you don't have a Win Me boot floppy you can download the image of a
Win Me OEM boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. Download to your desktop,
double click to run and follow the prompts to transfer the image to a
floppy.

Do NOT copy the downloaded file to a floppy - that won't make a bootable
floppy but instead a floppy disk containing the file you downloaded.

This can be done on any PC and then the floppy used with the PC having
problems.

Or, the other alternative :-

"aspi2dos.sys was not found"

Normally, when installing Me from a MS retail CD, it copies the whole
installation setup folder to windows\options\install. But with (some?) OEM
CD's, it copies them to windows\options\cab.

When creating a startup disk, WinMe normally directs itself to the
installation folder containing BASE2.CAB from one or other of the above
folders, depending on where the installation folder was copied to, and
extracts (some of) the files - including aspi2dos.sys etc. - from BASE2.CAB.

Your problem suggests that WinMe may be looking in the wrong folder (the
path may be wrong or missing) or possibly the installation files *may* have
been deleted at some time (to save approx 120MB of disk space).

However, if they are still in either the \install or \CABS folder, then you
only need to re-direct the warning to the appropriate folder and it should
then continue and create the disk.

Oops....Mart is right. I found my BASE2.CAB folder was on the D drive
and directed it to that....worked out fine. It was not in
C:Windows\Options at all.

When I first got the computer, I had no problem with aspi2dos.sys, etc.
Did a recovery disk and all was fine. But for some strange reason, a
lot of us using WinME somehow lose this ability and you have to do a
search for either the aspi2dos.sys or the BASE2.CAB folder in order to
make one.

If not, then you can make one from the Bootdisk website, as I said.

Cheers Heather, I've no idea why/how your BASE2.CAB file was on your D:
drive (although I'm sure that there must be a logical explanation -
somewhere <g>) but once located, directing the error warning to that
location (usually) fixes things.

Hi Mart.....all of my WinX folders were on a small 2 gig D drive. I was
missing that same aspi2dos file too, along with many others. I believe
I made a rescue disc from one of the folders on the C drive tho.
Perhaps the Options one. Must turn the old thing on and check.

Hi Heather and Mart:

I found those files in the WIN\OPTIONS\CAB\BASE2.CAB
When trying to make a Startup disk I get:
An Error Details pops up:
"The following error occurred: 'The file was not found" (error#2),

Setup could not finish opening a file on the source disk.

Source File: 'C:\WINDOWS\INF\aspi2dos.sys"
Distination file: :C\WINEBDO.400\EBD\aspi2dos.sys=base2.CAB'

AND BELOW: COPY FILE FROM: C:\WINDOWS\INF

Obviously I need to change the 'Source File' from INF to OPTIONS\CAB,
but its not accepted, or I'm doing something wrong? Can you help pls.

I realized how inane that was after I typed it.....but what the heck.
Stranger things have happened, grin.

Why not make one from the Bootdisk website?? I had one from there after
that happened. I also had one from a folder on my C drive, but I will
have to turn on ME and see which one.

My BASE2.CAB folder was on my D drive, btw.....made one from that as
well.

Paul, like Heather, you've caught me at a 'senior moment' too <g>

Odd that you referred to WIN\OPTIONS\CAB\BASE2.CAB rather than
WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CAB\BASE2.CAB. Are you sure that it is WIN and not
INDOWS? -- Could therefore be a faulty 'path' issue.

Just wonder if you did actually re-direct the error notice to (browse for)
your WIN(or WINDOWS) \OPTIONS\CAB\BASE2.CAB folder/file.

If so, then I can only suspect that there is something wrong with the
BASE2.CAB which *should* contain the aspi2dos.sys (and other) file(s). You
should be able to open the .CAB (in Windows Explorer) to inspect that it
contains aspi2dos.sys.

BTW - the xxx\OPTIONS\CAB folder should also contain a whole stack of .CAB
files (e.g. WIN_8.CAB to WIN_22.CAB and a host of other files too) and have
a total size of some 153 MB.

FYI - BASE2.CAB *should* contain some 166 objects (files) according to
Windows Explorer.

But if you are still struggling, go for the Bootdisk site as Heather
suggested. Maybe your OEM/supplier has not installed (or included) the WinMe
setup files for some obscure reason - money!

Yes should have been WINDOWS, but didnt think (but then I think too much)
that the abbreviation would make a difference; explation with WIN pls??

I found those files in the WIN\OPTIONS\CAB\BASE2.CAB
When trying to make a Startup disk I get:
An Error Details pops up:
"The following error occurred: 'The file was not found" (error#2),

Setup could not finish opening a file on the source disk.

Source File: 'C:\WINDOWS\INF\aspi2dos.sys"
Distination file: :C\WINEBDO.400\EBD\aspi2dos.sys=base2.CAB'

AND BELOW: COPY FILE FROM: C:\WINDOWS\INF

Obviously I need to change the 'Source File' from INF to OPTIONS
but its not accepted, or I'm doing something wrong? Can you help pls.

P.S. Retried with WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CAB\BASE2.CAB and same error.

In the CABS there are 243 objects and 176 MB; includihg the BASE2.CAB as
well as the Win_8.CAB up to _22.
In the BASE2.CAB there are 166 objects and 2.13 MB.

I think that I've taken enough of your time, the startup disk *seems* to
work, which, if I'm using it correctly seems a mystery...thanks for your help
and Heather too.
