try this

go back to a system Restore point just prior to your problem - but no more
than a week old!

I have tried the method you suggested. Thank You
However now I have the following error...
Error loading Progman.exe.
You must reinstall windows

I have checked the shell line shell=progman.exe
There is an extra period after the exe command the computer adds this. Is it
supposed to?

Thanks Mark

there shouldn't be a second '.' at the end - the line should simply be

Shell=progman.exe

There's nothiing that should add a '.' to the line!

very strange - I wonder if the config.sys and/or autoexec.bat are corrupted?

try renaming them to config.old and autoexec.old (they're not needed in Win
ME anyhow)

Rather than
shell=progman.exe
you could try using
shell=c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe
which will then take you straight in to system restore.

I tried to rename the files but not too sure if it worked.
Is it as simple as opening the file and then resave?
As still have same problem on restart.

I did install a new video driver just before the system crashed ??
But have since removed it.
Also had another video driver & card installed. Have removed that also.

Is time to take the machine to a computer shop ???

Many Thanks
Mark

Just opening and saving under a new name leaves the old file there!
You need to open Windows Explorer, and r-click on the filename, and rename
it.
