View Full Version : Only one system restore point

PAT (Paul)

Hi al:

There is only one restore point in my System Restore (dated today). I
checked before updating Spyware Blaster and few others. Also as a curiosity
there is 131 KB in the .SWP file but cannot access them: "The WIN386.SWP file
is in used by another application and cannot be accessed" .
Usually there are two weeks with many restore points.
Any help would be appreciated, nothing special was done today and the last
several days, except that I used CCleaner as I do almost every day.
Regards, (PAT) Paul

I'm not sure what you are trying to do with win386.swp but as this is the
swap file it is an integral part of the operating system and cannot be
accessed whilst Windows is running.

Turning to your lack of system restore checkpoints this can happen for
many reasons including a temporary lack of free space on the system drive
which can cause the store to flush or the deletion of a large volume of
files anywhere on the system that have system restore monitored extensions
and the space required to archive these deleted files being a significant
fraction of the space allocated to the archive therefore causing older
checkpoints and their associated files to be flushed to make room for
copies of the newly deleted files.

Sorry meant the Restore files CPY WHICH IS 178 Mo.

Mike, I'm not sure what its all about; my HDD has 17 GB free, the computer
seems to be working ok; verified an HJT log of today with one taken a month
ago and all is ok; before posting I ran: CWShredder v2.l9; Ad-Aware SE1R91;
spyware; spybot v.1.3; stinger v.2.5.9 and all ok. Didnt have chance for
Virus check, Scandisc and Defrag - but the machine is as fast as usual...will
try tomorrow.
Meantime: Memory total 320; free= 92 MB; Utilization 71%
Swap Space: Total 1729 MB; Used 105 MB; Utilization 6%
Virtual Memory Total 2047 MB Used 334 MB; Ut: 16%
PU Utilization fluctuates btn 14 to 35%

I'm increasingly getting the feeling that CCleaner is involved here,
somehow - I'm going to have a play and see what I see.
The number of times I've seen CCleaner and a single Restore point mentioned
in the same thread is worrying.

Pat - do you use CCleaner on its default settings? - what settings do you
use?

Paul,

I'm sorry but you've totally lost me with "meant the Restore files CPY
which is 178 Mo". Is this in response to my query as to what you were
trying to do with the Windows swap file? As for everything else all bets
are off the moment someone mentions using a registry cleaner or a tool
such as CCleaner - something Noel noticed but I had skipped over in my
haste to reply. :-)

You mention having 178MB of CPY files in the _RESTORE\TEMP folder. This
might suggest that the state manager has temporarily stopped analysing and
"cabbing" these files which fits in with a lack of restore points. What
happens if you just leave the PC on but doing nothing for a while? Does
the state manager kick in, create a check point and start to clear down
the TEMP folder and move those files that it wants to keep to the ARCHIVE
folder as FS*.cab files?

OK - I installed CCleaner into an ME VPC, and ticked every options I cold
find for it to clean:)
System Restore still functions properly, despite the fact that I got a BSOD
after the first round of cleaning, and had to boot to Safe Mode and back
gain to get the system working (there were a couple of options which are
more related to NTFS than FAT, so I suspect the system barfed on that). I'll
continue playing and see what happens

Sorry, my answer was in response about your query:
"Paul, Custom:
I'm sorry but you've totally lost me with "meant the Restore files CPY
which is 178 Mo". Is this in response to my query as to what you were
trying to do with the Windows swap file?" Yes, MY confusion' should have
talked about the .CPY files: which is 178 Mo."

Noel Paton:
Thanks for your response. I only use CCleaner to get rid of: Cookies'
TIF, Win Temp Files older than 48 hrs. In the Issues: Activex and Class
Issues: for keys not already in the registry (left overs from previous
programs), Obsolete Software. in the Tools:
In the Unistall: used it once to get rid of an Alcatel Modem which was
replaced with a better Modem - Alcatel had no uninsall file, also an old
browswer that I didnt know was there "Juno" but no keys were familiar on my
HJT log.
On the Options: Settings: none are used; Cookies: only the ones I use
often; on the Customs: none used; on the Advanced: "only delete files in
Windows Temp folders older that 48 hours;"
Noel, I hope this is not too confusing, but for the small use I do of
CCleaner, maybe I should get rid of it, since the only true help was to get
rid of a stubborn program (Alcatel). Also not quite sure what you mean but
using the "default settings" I cant see anything called default.

Tks for your help but think once this is cleared (restore points) I'll
stay away from these "wonder programs" that save me a couple clicks!
Meanwhile, after this post, I'll leave the puter for a few hours and see if
any new restore points are written, or I'm I missing something else?
Regards, Paul

Ping: Mike, Noel

As per suggestion by Noel, I left the beast alone, and had a look just now:
the beast has regurgitated a System Restore Point dated 6.43pm today...good
news I hope. The C:\_RESTORE\TEMP, has started to make .CPY files. Dont
know what all this means.

Below is a list of keys as copied from Regedit:

KEYS USED:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_USERS
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG

HKEY_DYN_DATA

The latter is new to me, think it came when I dummed the Alcatel Modem and
the JUNO programs. I could not find an uninstall file, so I used the
"ISSUE" tab and ticked "ActiveX and class issues" and the "Application" or
the "Obsolete Software" boxes (not sure which).

Yours views as to what to do next if you care.
Regards, and sorry to be a pain in the neck, Paul

Each CPY file is an archived copy of a file that has either been amended
or deleted that a) has a file extension that is included in the set
monitored by the state manager, and b) is located in a monitored area.
For example files with a DOC extension are not monitored wherever located
whereas those with an EXE extension are monitored unless, for example,
located in the My Documents folder (or sub-folder).

This is not unusual. Most hardware drivers don't come with uninstall
files.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you are doing here.

If system restore points are being created and files archived I wouldn't
do a thing.

Mike,
Thanks for your reply. I said "I used the "ISSUE" tab and ticked "ActiveX
and class issues" and the "Application" or the "Obsolete Software" boxes
(not sure which).

>I'm sorry but I don't understand what you are doing here."

I'm referring about using CCleaner to clear two programs: Alcatel and Juno,
since I could not get rid of them without the above method.

BTW I found that "new key" has to do with Win 95,98,98SE, at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q250568/ :

SUMMARY
This article describes the HKEY_DYN_DATA registry key in Windows 95, Windows
98, and Windows 98 Second Edition.

Guess I could get rid of it, but wonder if it got there by malware?
Yesterday I ran all the anti-malware programs advocated by this group and
found nothing; also it doesnt show in a fresh HJT log.
Just wondered...
