Networking XP and W98

My W98se machines are having a hard time seeing the shared folders on an
XP-Pro machine.
From the W98se, I'm logged in as UserA, password xyz. This same account and
password exist on the XP box. If a search the the N'hood for the XP, I find
it, I can see all the the appropriate folders and files and I can create,
but NOT write documents. But I can't see (it's blank) any text or other data
contained in any of the XP files.
That's via the N'hood! If I map a drive to the same XP folder I can see
folders and files, and I can create and edit them, no problem.
I have two generations of PCs in this office, all running W98se and all
with identical N'hood properties (I need to double check this statement
before I bet money on it. They're, at least, close). The GenerationOne PCs
are 4 years old, the GenerationTwo's are two years old. All of the
GenerationTwo's work fine, that is, I only need browse the N'hood to obtain
full access to the files I have appropriate rights to. All of the
GenerationOne PCs require that I map a drive in order to get full access.
Both Generations One and Two are both up to date patchwise.
Any clues or suggestions?

Please clarify Ron: If you browse through the Net N'hood, you can see
the files, but when you attempt to open them, you get a blank document
and no error is produced. Right?

Sounds like it *might* be a permissions issue, but you should get an
error. :-\

Thanks for the response, Mark.
I thought is was permissions, too. But when I map a drive
to the target folder, same PC, same session, same user,
everything works. I can write, read, edit, save, and
delete. Why the difference between mapping and using the
N'hood?

Wish I knew Ron. Maybe somebody more savvy than I will chime in. I'm
wrestling with Samba right now.
