View Full Version : Fatal Exception 0D

June 4th 04, 10:38 PM
This morning my machine failed to boot, giving me the blue
screen and this:

Fatal exception 0D has occurred at 209F:00002394. The
current application will be terminated.

The machine will only boot to safe mode.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Thanks,

George

What is fatal Exception 0D: General Protection Fault
Any condition which is not covered by any of the other processor exceptions
will result in a general protection fault. The exception indicates that this
program has been corrupted in memory usually resulting in immediate
termination of the application.

Select "0D" errors on this page.

The Computer Always Starts in Safe Mode

If you installed new hardware/software recently I would start by checking
and making sure I have the latest drivers.

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.

I have not added anything new, hardware or software, in
quite some time; the machine has been functioning as it
always has up until this failure.

I had previously read the FAQs referred to; they do not
help any. Their KB articles might be a great deal more
helpful if they would spell it out in English instead of
basically useless sentences interspersed with hex numbers.

At this point my only recourse will be to take it into a
repair shop if I can find one with a knowledgeable
technician.

When you say that it will only boot to Safe Mode, do you mean that a Normal
Mode boot fails, or that Normal Mode isn't even an option? If the former, go
into Safe Mode, then go to the Start=>Run box and type in MSCONFIG, then
click OK.

In the System Configuration Utility, choose Selective Startup, then uncheck
every item except the two involving WIN.INI ans SYSTEM.INI. Click OK and
restart when prompted. See if that works. Post back. We ain't done yet.

The F5 key pressed at boot leads to Safe Mode. To see whether it is
sticky, open Explorer, where F5 now means "Refresh". Does the screen
constantly blink? (Well, I guess that would happen on the Desktop too.)

There is a branch entitled "Now that I've installed my program, Windows
98 starts only in Safe mode." at "START, Help, Contents,
Troubleshooting, Windows 98 Troubleshooters, DirectX section". (If you
encounter blank Help screens there, then...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q188867
Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems. This article contains a
link to what it says is the equivalent of the Windows Help
Troubleshooters...
http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot
That's it.)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q143283
W98 Defaults to Safe Mode
It says, delete "Wnbootng.sts", if you have it.

"START, FIND, F/F, Wnbootng.sts". (Should be in C:\Windows.)
R-Clk it, & select "Delete"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q306615
Always Starts in Safe Mode

Here is a way to edit MSDOS.sys. This is an important file.

(1) You won't even see it, unless "START, Settings, Folder Options, View
tab" is bolted "Show all files"; may as well uncheck "Hide file
extensions..." too.
(2) Find "C:\MSDOS.sys" and back it up. Call the backup MSDOS.bck, in
C:\.
(3) Then, R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys", Properties, and uncheck Read-Only.

(4) Open it in Notepad, delete the "BootSafe=1", or change it to "=0",
save it, & quit Notepad.

(5) Then, R-Clk MSDOS.sys again, and make it Read-Only. Reboot.
(6) Can't reboot? Then, in DOS, copy the backup over the one you've
mussed.
(a) ATTRIB -R -S -H C:\MSDOS.sys
(b) COPY C:\MSDOS.bck C:\MSDOS.sys
(c) ATTRIB +R +S +H C:\MSDOS.sys
