Virus protection on a network query

From reading newsgroups about networking I have arranged that my client
PC(Win 98SE) has no virus protection relying entirely on the Virus
protection of the main PC(Win XP).I have made use of the XP protection.
Am I correct with this configuration?

No, the main PC can't give virus protection to the client PC. Each
computer needs its own antivirus program.

Perhaps you're thinking of firewall protection. If the main PC
connects directly to the Internet and the client connects to the
Internet through the main PC, then the main PC's firewall protects
both of them from Internet hackers.

Thanks for your help. I now realise that I had misunderstood what the
firewall does. I assumed that it was an anti virus protection device.
I had Norton Anti virus protection on the main PC but when I had to reload
XP I was refused the ability to reload it and will require to buy it as a
new piece of software. Rather unfair I thought

You're welcome, Blair.

I wouldn't buy another copy of Norton Antivirus. You should be able
to re-install the original version on the main PC if that computer
came with Norton. What exactly happened when you tried to do it?

For the other computer, my personal preference would be to get a less
expensive, less intrusive program than Norton. The one that I use on
my main computer and recommend to my clients is eTrust EZ Antivirus.
You can get a free trial version that's good for one year here:

http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft

Since you already have a firewall, install only the antivirus program.
Don't install the full EZ Armor product or the firewall that it
includes.

Thanks for your help. The Norton Anti Virus was installed when I bought the
PC but there was no CD with it. There was a complete negative trying to
reinstall it and when I contacted Norton they confirmed that I would have to
buy new.
I had a Norton CD(Win 98 only) for my client PC and I have now reinstalled
it.
I haven't got a firewall on my client P.C. (Win 98SE) but have one on my
main P.C. (WinXP)
I will look at your suggested software
