Windows ME does not recognize an MP3 player

About a year and a half ago I received this MP3 player for free while buying
something else.( believe it or not it has no manufacturer name on it or on
the inside ! ) When I tried to use it my computer did not recognize it. I
came to one of these help sites and someone told me what to do. It was very
easy but I can not remember what that fix was.....it had to do with removing
a couple of bits of information from somewhere. Since then because of viruses
I had to format my hard drive and I seem to have lost that fix. I have taken
the MP3 player to work and tried it on my computer there and it works fine.
My computer at work has Windows 2000. My home computer is Windows ME.
When I plug the MP3 player in at home the cursor blips like it saw it....
then nothing happens. When I plug it in at work it says loading USB Mass
storage device.
Can anyone help ?

My daughter has an MP3 player and that one is only compatible with Win
XP or later.

Mike......thanks for your response, but as my memo said, I did get it working
on Windows ME a year ago and now I have lost the fix. So it should work on ME.

The only thing I can think of is to check with the manufacturer.
I'm happy to say I don't have an MP3 player.

Since you know the device works as a "USB Mass storage device" I think you
need to boot into Safe Mode and remove the USB Mass Storage Devices listed
under USB in the Device Manager. But I'm only guessing.

Maybe.... lateral thinking?

Using the Win2000 machine, with the MP3 player plugged-in and working, you
could try installing AIDA32 from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html
and/or Belarc Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
and see if they will identify the manufacturer of your MP3 player.

If so, then you might be able to find more details - even the spec!

I'm no techie, but I'll tell you what worked for me. Try uninstalling other
programs which control devices which use the USBs (in my case they were for a
camera and a scanner). You may find this works!

PS some people are ridiculous snobs about MP3 players, aren't they?
