Using Window ME

Has been working just fine until today. Now when I click on START > SHUTDOWN
> RESTART, what I get is my monitor going blank and a small horizontial line
blinking in the upper left corner. The computer does not reboot. I have to
shut it down manually and restart it.

What might be causing this?

Thanks you,

Craig

Thank you for your help. Here is what has transpired.

I restored to a prior date using system restore. Now all I got was a red box
stating "NAV auto protect: unable to initialize the virus scanning engine
database files".

I uninstalled Norton Antivirus and reinstalled it. By this point I had read
your response and no, I had not installed anything what-so-ever. I also ran
scanreg as per your suggestion and the scan was fine.

After all this I tried to restart windows and all seems to be working okay.
Norton Antivirus seemed to be the culprit.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond - I appreciate you help.

"Norton Antivirus seemed to be the culprit"

So - the obvious solution/preventive is to get rid of the culprit!
Note that doing so is NOT as simple as 'uninstall Norton'!! - should you
decide to do so, you will need to run at least one other removal tool from
the list in this link...
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2002031914291648?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

....and possibly do a registry cleanup afterwards as well (and don't forget
that the biggest culprit within the Norton family is actually LiveUpdate,
which has to be uninstalled separately!)

You definitely *Need Help*!

Thanks all - but my computer is now restarting as it should. All I needed to
do was uninstall and the reinstall Norton Antivirus.

Come to think of it...this all started after my last virus update on the
original install.

Thanks again,

Craig

What kind of AntiVirus software do you suggest (other than Nortan)?

Noel Paton

AVG works very well with ME, without any of the aggravating factors of
Norton
You can either use the free version, or the paid-for one.

Avast is good--works well for me. But be aware, it will prevent the auto
creation of System Restore points. I make manual ones every few days or
sooner if I think that it's necessary.

MLD:
For some reason I am able to get System CheckPoints after running
ScanDefrag, I believe, even with Avast, but it must be disabled for the
scan.
Go figure.

Hoooopssss, slight correction:
Instead of "ScanDefrag" it should read "Diskeeper Light".
Sorry about that.
On the other hand, it may work both ways, too.
Time will tell.
