SLOW wireless lan

I have a desktop and laptop running W98SE with all
critical updates installed. I recently connected them
using D-link 802.11b gear: DFE-530TX+ Ethernet card added
to the desk top connects to a DI-614+ wireless router and
a DWL-650 wireless cardbus adapter in the laptop. These
are the only two nodes on my network. I do not have a
high speed internet connection at this time so there is no
WAN connection to the router. I get connectivity and
excellent signal strength and quality per the D-link
monitor. But, transfering a 1.25MB file takes about 3
minutes (that's about 7Kbps!!!). I get same results
regardless of direction of transfer or from which machine
it is initiated. D-Link replaced both the router and the
wireless cardbus adapter but neither helped. Based on
excellent ping tests results between machines and between
machines to router, they concluded the problem is in
windows not their equipment. They will provide no more
help. I am running these test transmissions in the
default install mode, that is the firewall and other
features are disabled. I will add these once the basic
network is working satisfactorily. D-Links 2X accelerated
wireless technology is also disabled but, enabling makes
no improvement. I've removed and reinstalled drivers,
supporting adaptor and protocol software, and disabled
everything not essential to running windows and the
network itself themselves, all without any improvement. I
have found no way yet to even isolate the problem to one
machine or the other. But, I have gone so far as to
reinstall windows on the laptop. I've searched the
internet but come up with nothing. Hasn't anyone else had
this problem? Where can I go from here?

Anyone's suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Do a continuous ping between stations. I'd bet that you will see a lot of
dropped packets. When this happened to me, I reduced the network speed from
11mbps to 2mbps and eliminated the dropped packets, improving efficiency and
thus speed.

Gerry, Sorry I did not reply earlier, been too busy to
check back. Will try your suggestion. One question, can

Still don't know how to do the "continuous ping", but I
reduced the network speed all the way down to 1mbps (and
all increments in between)without any improvement in
throughput. Doesn't appear to be a problem with cropped
packets, at least which can be cured by slowing the
transmission speed. Any other ideas?
