Fax help

[Speedy G.]

I've just installed a HP 4215 all in one on a dsl connection. Installation
went smooth and I'm able to scan, copy and print but I can't fax. I can't
figure for the life of me a way to send and recieve faxes. Can someone help
with setting up the fax aspect on this pc. I connect through a westell 327w
router with windows me. Thanks in advance.

You have to use an ordinary phone line for fax - you can't use the Internet

Thanks Noel.
As far as I know it is an Ordinary voice\data phone line. Please explain on
how I can have a fax enabled line.

Does your PC have a modem connecting it to your voice line? This is not
your connection to your Westell router. You need to be able to dial up
the number to which you wish to send your fax. Unless you can do that you
will not be able to send or receive faxes.

My netodragon dialup modem was taken out when i upgraded to dsl and a
external router\modem (versalink 327w). What I did was added a phone splitter
into the back of the Versalink. The phone line from the all in one going into
one side of the splitter and the other phone line going out into the wall
jack. With this setup I have no problems sending and recieving faxes while
online.

If you don't have a POST or PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) modem
then you cannot send faxes. Since you say you removed your modem you
cannot send faxes. You cannot send faxes over DSL unless you happen to
subscribe to a web service that will transcribe faxes for you and then
forward them for you over PSTN to the target number.

You cannot send faxes using the system you describe.

Thanks for explaining. I'm a bit cofused and need to do more research on this
matter. If what you say is true why am I able to send and recieve faxes. I
have faxed to three different faxes numbers successfully and each recieved
the test faxes sent from my destination. I also asked the recipients to send
a test fax back and I recieved them successfully. Is it possible when
installing the Hewlard Packard product that the necessary components were
installed with package. There has to be at least 70mbs that was added when
installing from the H.P. software, one of which is the Net Framework. Thanks

I'm sorry but I appear to be missing something. Your first post to this
thread said "but I can't fax" but now you say you can so what exactly is
the problem you are having? If your HP4215 (a product I don't know) is
connected to the phone circuit then it can fax. From the HP web site I
see that the HP4215 does indeed have its own built-in 33.6Kbps modem which
when connected to a phone circuit is how it can send faxes and this is
entirely independent of your PC or your ADSL connection.

Sorry Mike for not mentioning it but before posting I had changed the phone
wire coming from the all in one to the wall outlet to the splitter behind the
versalink. When the phone wire was connected, via splitter to the wall jack I
would get no dsl signal. I since changed that wire to go into the splitter at
the back of the versalink. With this configuration I am able to fax and
recieve.

OK. Understood. I think that if you want to wire the HP4215 to the wall
outlet rather than to the outlet on the back of the router/modem you will
need to use a microfilter at the wall socket to isolate the frequencies
used for the "phone service" (and hence also the fax) from those used for
ADSL. Without a microfilter on the phone/fax cable the DSL signal to the
router modem will be seriously degraded.

I have the micro filter installed and It does not degrade the connection at
all.
