Lost DNS & Gateway

My network has a W98, Win XP & Win/ME machine on it.

One day, my ISP had a conniption. When it came back, all
was fine with the XP and ME machine. However the 98
machine can't find the DHCP provided DNS (neither the
primary or secondary DNS)nor the gateway.

I have full access from and to the machine from other
machines on the net, and can ping them without a problem --
and the W98 machine can be pinged on the local net.

When I ping the DNS at the ISP numerically, I get an
exceeding TTL error, then 0% error and 4 for 4 pings go
through in < 10 ms.

The ME machine can print on the 98's printer as can the XP
machine, no prob.

How do I get internet access back?

If you know what the DNS server IP's are, then override the DHCP provided
ones and set them manually.

I tried that. Still no luck. Arrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!

Manually sat both the DNSs and the gateway. Nada.

And what does winipcfg say about the setup after you reboot?

Have you tried deinstalling and reinstalling the TCP/IP stack?

Reads normally, showing a gateway -- and grabbing the right one from the
DHCP. Just the W98 machine can't get off the local net.

If you can ping the local host, great\ -- that means the card works.

If you can ping the local gateway, great -- that means you have
connectivity.

If you can ping the ISP's DNS server, that means your ISP can route you
properly. You should then be able to ping by IP just about anywhere that
hosts ICMP. The next thing you;ll need to try is pinging by URL to confirm
that DNS is properly working.

No probs there.

And no probs there. In fact, pinging anything on the local net works, as
does browsing the local net machines.

Only on the W98 machine is there a problem doing *anything* with the ISP.
From W98, it can't find the ISP's DNS by name. Numerically, I get a TTL
Exceeded, bur only on W98. Anything pinged off local net fails with TTL
probs.
