My DVD drive died, so I bought an Emprex interna DVD 8x
drive.
After installing it, I discovered it does not work
with "Windows 99 Gold". I have three questions"
1) What is Windows 98 Gold? I have Windows 4.10.
2) Is there a DVD drive that works with my version of OS?
3) Does it make sense to update my Windows 98 to a version
that works with this drive or buy a new computer?

I have an emprex 1008i. It states the following requirements:
CPU Pentium III 600MHz or better
Memory Minimum 128M
Hard Disk 850MB of availabler space
Operating Systems win98SE/2000/NT/ME/XP

Thus you may need to update to win98SE.

Its referring to the original Win98. As opposed to 98SE.

All ide DVD drives are seen initially as CDroms. So, the answer is yes if
you want it for reading CDs. If its a USB or Firewire interface, probably
have to do some shopping. You know what you have underneath your hood and
your OS version. Check the DVD and its interface requirements before
purchase. Ask questions if you don't understand a requirement.

Don't know what's under your PC's hood, and don't know if you have any plans
for ripping/encoding/burning DVDs. If you just want to play DVDs, you're
probably okay for just an OS upgrade. But, you need to check the specs for
the OS you intend to upgrade for hardware requirements. If this task is too
great, buy a new PC with all the bells and whistles you're looking for.
