Printer Problem....cannot update win.ini

I've had to unistall my software for my HP deskjet 640C
and then reinstall it. However, I keep getting the message
that the software cannot update win.ini. If I ignore this
message, then the software is not fully loaded and I
cannot print from windows. Any Ideas what a novice like me
can do?
