is there a way to execute a printer "pause" (the same functionality as the
context menu item) from the command line or a script? thanks for any help,

Gary,
Why pause the printer? Why not suspend the act of sending
the print file to a printer. We have a product called
Virtual Port Monitor which redirects printer output
to file. The file can then later be sent to the printer
either programatically, or drag and drop.
