Several weeks ago I posted about a problem with sound on my ME machine. The
sound had mysteriously stopped working.
The Sound device was reported as working properly, but no sound playback
device was shown in the sound properties with options greyed out, and there
no speaker icon in the system tray.
I tried all the suggested fixes and more, with no success.
I renewed my search for a fix today aand have just happened on another
suggested fix.
This has worked.
These lines had become missing from system.ini (boot section) presumably due
to some corruption.
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv
sound.drv=mmsound.drv
on restoring these lines and rebooting all is now well :)
There was also a loaad of html code planted at the beginning of the
system.ini file which seems to confirm the corruption. I have taken this
out.
I hope this might be useful to anyone else experiencing the problem.
