Does the setup.exe file which come along
with OEM os differ from the normal/retail
version?
Can the setup.exe file dated 8/06/2000 can
work with OEM disk contents which are
in a different "compressed" format?
Thanks.

AAH,

I am unaware that the compressed format differs from CD to CD. I'm fairly
certain that it does not, the Microsoft cab format is the same across all
versions. The file setup.exe and one or two other non cab files can vary
however between various OEM versions and the various Microsoft versions of
Win Me (upgrade, full, etc.). All will still be dated 8 June 2000.

As part of making an OEM disc install like a retail one (long ago), I found
the OEM Setup.exe was insufficient. However, I took the Setup.exe from the
root of a Win 98se cd and hex-edited it (changing 98 to Millennium) after
which it worked.

AAH,

Interesting and also unusual. Which OEM was this? Please don't say Time
or Tiny. :-) What is the total size of the folder? Is it possibly an
image file?

The manufacturer is
Fujitsu Siemens computers
I think they have a main factory
in Germany.
I bought it locally. All the main big
stores have good pile of stock
at that time.
The brief folders details are :-

win9x 194 MB $FS compressed files

Other folders are like normal files.
tools 7.33 mb
sbsi 87.7 mb
fsc 81.1 mb
drivers 6.78 mb
cdsample 193.0 mb
add-ons 5.71 mb

The Microsoft win9x folder is roughly the same size as are the cdsample
and drivers folders. Whilst the Microsoft CD contains tools and add-ons
folders their sizes differ and has no sbsi or fsc folders.

Once installed does the windows\options\install or windows\options\cabs
folder contain the more normal cab set of files (precopy1.cab, base2.cab,
net3 &4.cab driver5, 6 & 7.cab and win_8 through win_22,cab as well as
win_ol.cab (contains ISP details such as for MSN)? Or does Fujitsu place
the folder in another location? If so you may want to burn a copy of that
folder to CD and use that if you have to reinstall Win Me.

Yes there is \Options folder including
some sub folders.
I give below very brief listing.
The \Cab and \Install folders should
be good enough to Re-Install the WinMe?

I have not tried the disc supplied by them to
re-instate/re-install the OS for fear of
wiping the HD partitions as it came
with C: partition and I created D: for
backups.

Windows\Options

AAH,

Fujitsu Siemens appear to have created a highly customised OEM CD.

In your case the primary folder is windows\options\cabs. The contents of
windows\options\install should ideally also be in the windows\options\cabs
folder and contains copies of updated system files that have been updated
as part of various hotfixes downloaded from the Windows Update site and
can used to replace the original versions in the various cab files when
reinstalling Win Me saving you from having to install some at least of the
hotifxes that have been released over the years. For example the file
smgr.dll was placed there when you installed the 290700 hotfix for system
restore.

The fsc and sbsi sub folders were placed there by Fujitsu and probably
contain applets and applications added by Fujitsu. Likewise Fujitsu
appear to have included a number of cab files that probably contain
drivers for the various hardware used on their PCs sold with Win Me
(DIVA.CAB, MR2800.CAB, MSP38SPW.CAB, MSP38WV.CAB, RADEON.CAB, RAGE128.CAB,
SCWPE98.CAB, SLAMR.CAB, SMLMR.CAB, SST56ISP.CAB). How these files are
used is possibly controlled by a custom msbatch.ini file built by Fujitsu
and executed during a Win Me install.

Thanks for the comments and clarifications.
As you say they are lot of hardware drivers.
I now have a better awareness of the \Cab
folder. I really did not try seriously to look
into it before.
Thanks.
