i have a laser printer LN15 made by the now-defunkt digital equipment
company . need a win 98 or 2000 driver, have looked everywhere . any
suggestions gratefully received

Glad you found a solution for Windows 2000.

For Win98, you could try a HP PCL5e driver from the HP web site.
