I have a Dell Optiplex GX280 that I am attempting to install Windows 98 on
in order to support legacy hardware and software at our company. I have
installed the Intel 915G (80201) family chipset drivers, but when it attempts
to install the PCI to USB bridge or the USB host controller, it detectf a USB
Host Controller (doesn't see it as an Intel USB Host Controller) and locks
the computer.

I can go into safe mode and it works fine.

Has anybody run into this? Is there any way to disable plug and play on
Win98? I can't disable the USB controller in the BIOS because there are no
PS/2 ports on the computer, so I'm forced to use USB for keyboard and mouse.

Thanks for the help.

Are you using drivers from Dell for the motherboard? If not, check with
Dell. Many times motherboards are configured to a manufacturer's
specifications and the drivers from Intel might not be correct for this
motherboard. This article might also be helpful if you need to disable pnp.

Sorry, the last article wasn't one that will help. This might:

It really sounds like you either have incorrect drivers for your motherboard
or a device conflict.

You may want to try running setup using the /p i switch at setup. This
switch tells Setup
not to report the existence of a Plug and Play BIOS.
