I am using a Gateway 233 MHz, 320MB- RAM- 40GB WD Caviar- and Win 98SE. I
have a yellow splat with an exclamation point in Device Manager/System
Devices/System board extension for PnP BIOS. My sound stutters as Win 98
boots up. The exclamation point is not present if I boot in Safe Mode,
indicating a driver (?) is causing my problem. How do I isolate that driver
to find which one is causing the problem and how do I fix it. Thanks

Try this. Boot into Safe mode. Then go to Device Manager and remove the
PNP BIOS driver that has the yellow exclamation mark when you are in normal
mode. If there is more than one PNP BIOS driver in this category, remove
them all.

Then look for a category named Other and delete everything from this
category. Often if a device is not correctly recognized or the drivers are
not available when you first set up Windows, the device will be put into
this category. Then when the correct driver is installed, this conflicts
with it.
