After re-installing win98SE on an old IBM PC 300GL I now only get 16 colors
(640x480).
I went to ibm.com and the driver site automatically detected I had a Cirrus
Logic 6561-34F
There were two files to download both labelled QB3T17A. I downloaded these 2
files to my desktop and when I open them they open to what appears to be a
DOS window. Before I proceed any further and try to run them does anybody
know if these are in fact the correct drivers that I need, and if so how in
fact I install them correctly.

Thanks for any help

Rob

The desktop is not a suitable place to these files. Move them to a new
folder that is labelled so you know why you created it (eg VIDEO_DRIVERS).

You should have downloaded three files - QB3T17A.exe, QB3217A.exe and
QB3T17A.txt. If you double click the TXT file it will open in Wordpad and
you can read the installation instructions.

Thanks for the info . I downloaded the three files into a video driver
folder like you suggested. I then extracted the two .exe to a 1.44Mb floppy.
I then tried to follow the txt file instructions for installation (the
instructions were for win 95 and Iam running win 98SE, but I think they are
fairly similar). When it came time to put in the disk into the A drive I got
an error message saying it could not detect my hardware. Also I see listed
when I search my hardware under cirrus logic different numbers (which I
belive are model #'s) but none refer to 6561 which the ibm site says I have
installed.

I realize this is not a very clear message that Iam writing but Iam more
than a little confused and would appreciate any help that you can give me.

Thanks

What procedure are you using to search your hardware and what are the
'different numbers' you are seeing? It's possible that you might be seeing
information about the current drivers, not the actual installed hardware.

What was the process that you used to identify the correct download site?
You indicated that the site 'automatically detected' your hardware, but was
this through some sort of investigation of your system or was it by you
entering model numbers or serial numbers?

Happy to say all is now working ok. I went to driverguide.com and found the
correct driver and it installed ok.
Thanks for your help.
