View Full Version : Trident drivers give Windows Proection Errors

I'm trying to do a favour for a neighbour whose Win98
machine was badly out of date and riddled with bad
apps...
Made a note of all the software; video driver was a
Trident Blade 3D MVP(66) and I have found several
versions on sites around the web, mainly on video-
drivers.com.
Every one that I have tried seems to load OK then I get a
Windows Protecion Error on startup and have to uninstall
the video driver in safe mode. I even found an
MVP_Book.zip file (which is exactly the machine in
question) which contained the modem, video and audio
drivers but got the same result with both the video
driver and the audio.
Does anyone know a way round this issue? I cannot change
the video card - it's onboard circuitry on a very small
machine. Any advice appreciated.

Check the Add/Remove software in the Control Panel to see if you can
Uninstall the video drivers there. If not, Reboot to Safe Mode.

Then, Right Click My Computer on the Desktop (Properties) and open the
Device
Manager. Click the + sign next to Display Adapters and Delete all the
entries there and reboot.

If the New Hardware Wizard pops up, click Cancel and continue booting to
Windows.

Install the correct video drivers.

Create a folder on your desktop called Video Drivers. Download the video
drivers to it. Click the icon to begin the installation process. Make
sure you *temporarily* disable your Anti-Virus program since it can
interfere with the installation process. Reboot.

Thank you for your advice; still stuck, however.
I have removed the dispolay adapter entries according to
your instructions.
Cannot cancel the New Hardware Wizard. there's no Cancel
button so it just runs its course. It get back to
a "Standard PCI Adapter" driving a "Plug and Play Monitor".
None of the Trident drivers I have works. I always end up
with a "Windows Protection Error; you must restart your
computer" error on restart.
The adapter is definitely a Trident Blade 3D MVP4(66).
Not sure where to go from here...

Reinstall the motherboard chipset drivers.

You also might want to take a look at these drivers on driverguide.com.
The sign-in name is drivers and the password is all.

That sounds like a configuration problem, probably associated with memory.
Check in BIOS setup whether there are settings available that may affect
video operation, such as shadowing BIOS or setting video memory size or
location similar.

I had a horrible feeling you'd say that!
I have the original W98 CD but not the motherboard CD;
neighbour hasn't got a clue what happened to it.

Thanks for the link to driverguide.com, those are
actually the ones I have found to try and the MVP4(66)
driver is specifically listed there, but I still get the
error.

I'm going to see if I can track down the motherboard
chipset drivers from the web, and I'll try Jeff Richardss
suggestion (thanks Jeff) to scour through the BIOS
settings. The machine did have a single 32MB memory
module fitted. I have replaced it with two 64MB DIMMS
and, at boot-up, it reads "131xxx MB memory with 4096
shared". (Cannot remember exact numbers, hence xxx). This
indicates to me that there may be a memory conflict
between system and video memory. Darned it I can find it
though.
I'll report back. Thanks for your advice.

You can download and run this program from MajorGeeks.com. It might be
able to determine what kind of chipset you have:

AIDA32 - Enterprise System Information 3.93

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=183

To find the Aida32 info you need to post, run the Aida32 program, and click
the + sign next to Computer
on the left side of your screen then click Summary.

Then Right click the information on the *right* side of your screen and
select Copy. You can then paste the information in Notepad or paste it
directly to this newsgroup.

Aida32 will tell you a lot about what's inside your PC. In addition to
telling us the *Brand and Model Number* of your computer, please post back
the information Aida32 reports for your:

Motherboard

CPU

Chipset

Display PCI/AGP Video

Display GPU

This information will assist us in finding the correct video drivers, and
directing you to the video card manufacturer's website so you can download
and install them.

*** IMPORTANT *** Remember to tell us the *Brand and Model Number* of your
computer which is printed on your PC case or is listed in the manual that
came with your computer.

OK, the problem is fixed, but thought I would feed back
as to how...
Thank you for the link to AIDA32 but it would not run on
the machine - it locked solid when the "Scanning PCI"
message came up. Don't know why: I tried AIDA on my own
machine and it worked perfectly, gave me masses of info
and was useful. I used Belarc Advisor from Crucial.com
and that gave me the info about the motherboard. It's a
VIA motherboard in a Patriot Computer. I did a search in
driverguide.com and found several BIOS updater apps, none
of which seemed to work. Most froze for several minutes
or sent the display completely wild and the original BIOS
date, details etc didn't change. However, none of them
wrecked the machine so I suppose I ought to be grateful!

I then went back to square one. I fdisked the machine,
set up W98 from scratch and then retried the VIA video
drivers from the via8501_vga_412.zip file I had download.
That worked: I had 1024x768 with 24-bit colour and no
Protection Errors, so was off and running. I then put the
DSL software on and downloaded the dozens of security
patches and updates... :-)
So, not sure HOW it worked, but it did and I am very
grateful for the time and advice; thank you very much.
