using win 98se, dell xpst-450 desktop, 5+ yrs old. pentIII, 450mhz, 384 ram,
13 gig drive, I.E. 6.0.

when i right click a file> open with> the "open with" box lists a blank item
on top. don't know how long its been there. it has the small
computer-generic type icon. the programs listed below show the program's
name & program's icon. is there a way to find out what that program the
blank one is? should/could it be removed?

no spyware, viruses, etc. machine runs fine.

any input greatly appreciated.

thank you, len kiesling

I have the same thing, and have had it as long as I can remember, running Win98. It
does no harm, and the work involved finding the Registry entry causing it, is not
worth the time. It is not something that you need to be concerned about, if that
helps.

Me too. If you bear in mind how the "classic" (Win95-98SE) OpenWith
list is built up, then the mechanism may become clear.

Basically, all actions that happen to be called "open" have the
executable listed in the list, sorted alphabetically.

For some file types, the parameter file is itself taken to be the
executable, i.e. the "open" action is "%1". This applies to .EXE and
similar "program" file types. It may be these actions are not
properly fitered out of the OpenWith list, so you see the results of
an invalid null pointer or something.

I just tip-toe away quietly...

Hi Leonard

I agree with Glen. Leave it alone as it is harmless.
I removed the one I had some years ago but it was not an easy task in
the Registry and I have long since forgotten exactly where it was.
