I have several 98 machines here at school that have started giving this error
at boot up. Not all of the 98 machines are affected. This error occurs
right after the network login box appears. The machine then freezes. It
will restart in safe mode.

I found that going into device driver and removing the BDE streaming drivers
for the sound card usually frees the machine up. (I believe these drivers
must have been in the windows update list sometime early in the fall.)
However, they eventually reinstall and I have to do the removal again. So, I
went into regedit and tried removing every mention of BDE drivers as well as
any mention of streaming media drivers. I also removed the MS security patch
that was causing freeze up problems, but that didn't help. Most machines run
fine now, but I have three that still have this fatal error. I read on one
KB article to remove all .tmp files from the computer, so I did. That helped
on two of the computers, but one will still not get past the BSOD. They all
have ESS sound cards in them. They are celeron 500mhz processors with VIA
chipset and 64 MB of ram if any of that helps.

Thanks, Ed
