i have a 5 year old pentium 3 clone computer w win 98. i want to install a cd
burner, a new modem, and get a new monitor. perhaps later get win xp.

is it better to keep the pentium 3 or just by a new celeron. i cant afford a
pentium 4.

it seems like going to celeron, while cheap, would be a step down for me.
the pent 3 works fine. should i just upgrade?

You can buy a new Dell for about what it will cost you to upgrade--maybe
even less. Frankly, I think you would be wasting your money investing that
much in a five year old computer.

You are best to "fit the tool to the job".

How do you intend to use the new computer?

Knowing so little, I would nevertheless strongly urge you to purchase a new
machine, since hardware is so inexpensive just now.
And you get a new warranty and support, ...(maybe!).

The best I can suggest is:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
Usually trying to bring up old hardware to perform close to more modern
advertisements is futile as everything has to be "upgraded".
CD-burners work on mine Pentium/166 with 48M Ram, modems and monitors
too, but try to get near such hardware with Xtra Problems OS and I can
only wish you "Brake a leg!" ("Good luck!" at my student years).
So save yourself a constant "upgrading" hobby and when the time comes do
a complete change, it is much cheaper and at least you get the required
response at once.

Have fun
