So I did a stupid thing.

For some reason, I removed my CD-ROM drive from device manager. I tried
restarting to see if Windows 98 would auto-detect it, but it didn't. Then, I
tried the "add new hardware" wizard. That didn't detect it automatically
either. When I tried to manually input the device, the window that popped up
didn't have the manufacturer listed, so I couldn't choose it.

To make matters worse, I don't have a Win98 disk, and I 'm SURE that when I
try to reinstall the drivers it's going to ask me for said disk.

So what should I do? Here are the particulars:

CD-ROM drive: Samsung CD-Master 40E, Model SC-140
OS: Win98 Second Edition
No internet at home (I'm posting from work)
eMachines 500 mHz

Thanks in advance,

Steven

If this problem is less than five days old, restore a copy of the registry
that predates the onset of the problem and see if that helps. The five-day
limit assumes that the computer is booted every day. If it is not booted
every day, you may have an old enough registry backup that you can use even
though more than five days have elapsed.

On the Start Menu, select Shut Down and Restart in MSDOS Mode. At the
Windows prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter. Once the
registry restore screen appears, select the date of the registry that you
wish to restore by highlighting it and then click enter. If you see a
registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a copy of the registry that has already
been replaced.

Thanks, Ron. I'll give that a try.

Anybody else have any ideas I could try if this doesn't work? I want to try
as many things as I can tonight when I get home.

Ron's suggestion should work. If for some reason you still can not install/see
your CD ROM:

Get the latest updated firmware/drivers from:
http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/LiveUpdate/FWDownload/FWDownload.asp?FunctionValue=view&no=63&SearchWord=&SearchMode=&PageNumber=3&product_code=HCR&os_no

If the link breaks, copy paste all of it into your browsers address bar or click
below:
http://tinyurl.com/dlem2

If this does not take you to the specific page for the firmware/drivers, start
here:
http://erms.samsungusa.com/customer/sea/jsp/faqs/faqs_ars_input.jsp?PROD_SUB_ID=27&PG_ID=1
