Taskbar

[Joy]

This is not necessarily a Win98 question (I have WinXP myself) but I am
trying to help someone who has Win98. He has all sort of things taking up
room on the taskbar that should ONLY be on his desktop, and I can't figure
out how to remove them from the taskbar for him. They are: My Computer;
Floppy Drive A; HP Pavilion (his computer); My Documents; and Network
Neighborhood. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks.

If they are on the taskbar, they must be open. Can you right-click the task
bar icon and select Close?

Are the icons in the Systray (near the clock) or the Quick Launch (near
Start) because their exact location is important when it comes to
removing them.

I think he tried that with at least one of them and that option wasn't in
the pop-up menu. I'm away from his computer now, so I can't look.
I can't imagine that all those things showing up there would be open. Even
so, they wouldn't stay open after rebooting, which we did more than once.
Could spyware cause something like that? In fact, come to think of it, we
did open a couple of them (for another reason) but closed them afterwards
and yet the names were still on the taskbar.

They were spread across the whole Taskbar, from the Start button to the
Clock, taking up the whole bar. The way various programs normally are when
you open them. I think only 3 of those I named showed up at first, but then
if I moved the Taskbar up so that it was double (or even triple), that whole
list (that I named below) showed up. Things like (as I said) Network
Neighborhood and HP Pavilion, that one would never open from the Desktop
anyhow.

Do you mean in the Quick Launch Bar? (The QLB is normally right beside
the Start button in Win98 and WinXP as well.)

If so, then they can be deleted or moved to the Desktop.
You should find the shortcuts in C:\WINDOWS\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch if you have problems.

Alan,

They aren't on one side or the other, but in the center where any program
would be that you open. For instance right now I have O.E. and I.E. and
WordPerfect open and the "bars" with their names on are spread across the
center.

Tell him to right-click a blank spot on the taskbar, select "Toolbars" =
and
see if "Desktop" is checked. If so, he should uncheck it.

They would re-open after booting if they have entries in the startup folder.
If he's managed to move them off the display area he wouldn't be aware they
were open.

Are you sure they are in the taskbar? I have seen people get them into the
office shortcut bar and not be able to remove them.

By "office" (shortcut bar) do you mean MS Office? Because he doesn't have
Office, or Word, only WordPad and WordPerfect. Hence no office shortcut bar
if that's what you are referring to.
