View Full Version : Display Adapter Problem

Daniel Rose
June 17th 04, 04:00 AM
When I uninstalled Iomega HotBurn software, after a reboot Windows
reinstalled about 20 drivers. The one for the video card or montior is
not correct. I am stuck at 16 colors with a resolution of 640x480.

I tried the steps in Jeff Richrard's reply above, and Windows said I
already had the best driver. I know the file is in my system or on the
Windows 98 SE CD, because the display was working just earlier today.

My monitor is a KDS SVGA 15", and my video card is an S3

Thank you,
Daniel

P.S.

When the computer boots up, I get the following message:

"Display
There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is
wrong, or the current settings do not work with your hardware."

If you just reinstalled Windows, or you cannot change to 256, 16 bit, or 32
bit color, you probably need to reinstall your video card drivers.

To reinstall your video card drivers, you need to know the exact make and
model of your video card in order to install the correct/updated drivers.

There are several ways to determine what kind of video card you have.

1. Check the manual that came with your PC.

2. You can open your PC tower to look at the video card and note the name
and numbers printed on it.

3. You can download and run this program from MajorGeeks.com. It might be
able to determine what kind of video card you have:

AIDA32 - Enterprise System Information 3.93

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=183

To find the Aida32 info you need to post, run the Aida32 program, and click
the + sign next to Computer
on the left side of your screen then click Summary.

Then Right click the information on the *right* side of your screen and
select Copy. You can then paste the information in Notepad or paste it
directly to this newsgroup.

Aida32 will tell you a lot about what's inside your PC. In addition to
telling us the *Brand and Model Number* of your computer, please post back
the information Aida32 reports for your:

Motherboard

CPU

Chipset

Display PCI/AGP Video

Display GPU

This information will assist us in finding the correct video drivers, and
directing you to the video card manufacturer's website so you can download
and install them.

*** IMPORTANT *** Remember to tell us the *Brand and Model Number* of your
computer which is printed on your PC case or is listed in the manual that
came with your computer.

The drivers for your S3 Virge PCI 325 video card can be found here:

http://ranger.s3graphics.com/swlib/325drv/

W9531201.zip 244k 1999 May 13 Binary- MS Cert.Win 95
v.4.03.00.2111-3.12.01-PR

They are the latest and last drivers available from S3.

Create a folder on your desktop called Video Drivers.

Download the video drivers to it. Right click and extract the files to the
*same folder*, or extract it using one of the free zip utilities from the PC
World Magazine website:

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6531,00.asp

**If you already have the drivers extracted in a folder you can find, then
start here.**

Since the drivers do not have a self-installer so you will have to follow
these installation instructions for Example 2 or Example 3:

DRIVER INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

Start the "Display" applet program.

Select the "Settings" page, push the "Change Display Type" button.

Push the "Change" button in the "Adapter Type" area.

Push the "Have Disk" button and press "OK".

Specify the path to the new driver and press the <ENTER>
key:

Example 2: Type in the name of the directory where you copied
the drivers, either on your local hard drive or
on a network share.
(***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created
on your Desktop***)

Example 3: If you're not sure exactly where the drivers are,
choose the "Browse..." button are find them.
(***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created
on your Desktop***)

The "Select Device" dialog box will appear. Select the adapter that
corresponds to the one you installed in your machine and click OK.

Windows 95 (or Windows 98) will copy the display drivers to the proper
directories
on your system.

Continue choosing Close until asked to restart your machine from the
"Systems Settings Change" dialog box.

After the system has restarted, you can go back into the Display
applet and select alternate screen resolutions and color depths.

Make sure you *temporarily* disable your anti-virus program since it can
interfere with the video drivers installation process. Reboot your
computer.

Thank you very much, Joe. In the "Select Device" table there were three
choices. I selected "S3 Inc. ViRGE PCI". The other choices were "S3
Inc. ViRGE/DX/GX/ PCI" and "S3 Inc. ViRGE/VX PCI". The display is
working much better now, in 16-bit color at 800x600 resolution.

There are still a few problems.

When the computer starts up, the Desktop wallpaper shows. Then a box
displays reading:

RUNDLL
Error loading C:\WINDOWS\NEWDOT~1.DLL
The system cannot find the file specified.

Then there is another box reading:

Error
Resource file not founded. Program killed.

Near this point the screen goes dark for about 15 seconds. After that
everything seems OK.

Would there be anything else I can try? When my computer was first set
up under Windows 95, it had drivers for Number Nine. Windows 98 has
drivers for that.

Thanks again,
Daniel

P.S. There is one other problem. The various shades of blue do not
display properly. There are sharp divisions between the various
intensities of blue.

| Thank you very much, Joe. In the "Select Device" table there were three
| choices. I selected "S3 Inc. ViRGE PCI". The other choices were "S3
| Inc. ViRGE/DX/GX/ PCI" and "S3 Inc. ViRGE/VX PCI". The display is
| working much better now, in 16-bit color at 800x600 resolution.
|
| There are still a few problems.
|
| When the computer starts up, the Desktop wallpaper shows. Then a box
| displays reading:
|
| RUNDLL
| Error loading C:\WINDOWS\NEWDOT~1.DLL
| The system cannot find the file specified.
|
| Then there is another box reading:
|
| Error
| Resource file not founded. Program killed.
|
| Near this point the screen goes dark for about 15 seconds. After that
| everything seems OK.
|
| Would there be anything else I can try? When my computer was first set
| up under Windows 95, it had drivers for Number Nine. Windows 98 has
| drivers for that.
|
| Thanks again,
| Daniel

Kazaa is Peer to Peer (P2P) software, which is often used to share music on
the internet.

The errors you are receiving indicate that Spyware is on your PC. "Almost
Bob" posted two links to free software that will remove the Spyware for you.
You need to download and run those programs.

Thank you, Joe and Almost Bob. I ran Ad-Aware and I no longer receive
the NEWDOT~1.DLL error.

However, at startup, I still get a box reading:

"Error
Resource file not founded. Program killed"

It's really no problem. I just click "OK" and everything is fine.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this error, though? I have
already run System File Checker and Registry Checker.

I don't know what that error message refers to. Maybe someone else will
come along who does.
