View Full Version : Problem with extracting files in Windows 98

I want to extract new copies of files in order to replace missing files and
repair damaged files for the purpose of avoiding a reinstallation. I think
there is a good chance that this will fix the current inoperable state of my
Windows 98 machine. As I can't boot to Windows (not even Safe Mode), I'm
using a Windows 98 Start disk with Windows support method for extracting.
The 3 compressed cabinet files that I want to extract are: msnp32.dll,
vserver.vxd and ndiswan.vxd. The msnp32.dll and vserver.vxd files can be
found on my hard disk (c:\) @ C:\Windows\System and C:\Windows\Options\CABS
directories respectively by using DIR filename /S DOS command. When I boot
up my PC, I receive a ndiswan.vxd missing file error and vserver.vxd error
and I see a unload msnp32.dll error when trying to enter Windows.

The Microsoft website says I can resolve this error by extracting the
msnp32.dll and vserver.vxd files from a Windosw 98 Installation CD and then
replacing the missing files or damaged files from the hard drive with these
files. See the Microsoft articles @
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;24343,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129605/EN-US/ and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;194990. Another
website also mentions that I could also extract these compressed files from
c:\Windows\Options\Install Folder. I tried extracting these files from the
d:\Win98 directory by typing "extract msnp32.dll" but it comes with an error
saying it can't open the file. I would like if somebody could tell me how to
extract these files properly. I would to remind you that I have backed up
all my files at this stage and would like very much to avoid a reinstallation
altogether. In the future I may have to run diagnostics software as these
files should not prevent me from booting to Safe Mode. Anyway, I'm
optimistic that the extraction of these files from the installation CD or
c:\Windows\Options\Install Folder will resolve my problem temporarily.

I would be obliged if somebody could please assist me in extracting these 3
files. Incidently, what is the location of the ndiswan.vxd file as I can't
find it anywhere? Even the extract command with the various switches does
not help me.

I await your response with regard to my file extraction problem.

Thanks

Martin Healy

Article 129605 tells you how to extract in Win98 and you do not appear
to be doing it.
Start-Run-SFC and extract one file.

The extract instructions provided in that article do not include the command
"extract msnp32.dll" so I can't see why you would be using it. According to
the instructions, the command would be

a:\extract D:\cabs\msnp32.dll /L C:\windows\system

or perhaps

a:\extract C:\options\cabs\msnp32.dll /L C:\windows\system

Extract the files using the machine you are posting on and then copy them to
a floppy disk. Double click the .cab file and then right click the file and
extract. The one you cannot find is in: Net9.cab File

Boot with a floppy start up disk--CDRom support is not required. If you do
not have a start up disk, make one with the Fat32ebd.exe file located on the
W98 CD: tools/mtsutil/fat32ebd.
At the A: prompt, put in the floppy containing the files you extracted.
Assuming you are replacing a .dll file named xyz, type: Copy A:\xyz.dll
C:\windows\system\xyz.dll and hit enter. Once the file is copied,
remove the floppy disk and reboot. While .dll files are filed in the system
folder, other files may be filed elsewhere so make sure you specify the
right folder.
