Looks like you disabled your sound card.

Please do not post attachments unless specifically asked. Posting attachments
is a very good way to be ignored due to the fact that it may contain a virus,
and many will never give it a second thought to simply bypass or delete your
post.

Please read the info at the link provided under my signature on suggested
proper posting to better acquaint yourself.

With that said, it sounds as if you were led down the wrong path with
misinformation. When all is inaccessible in Multimedia > Audio, your device does
not show as the Preferred Device and/or your device is not listed in the
dropdown list for selection, your device is either not installed, disabled or
not functioning properly.

Right click MyComputer on your desktop.
Click Properties > Device Manager tab.
Click the + next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
Is there a Yellow asterisk or Red X which indicates a conflict or problem? If
present, have a look in the devices properties to determine the cause.
Double click on your Sound device to open its properties.
What if any, message is displayed for the device in the Status window under the
General tab? Please post the results.
Are any lines unchecked under the Status windows to "Enable this device" or "Use
this device ......."? If disabled, recheck to Enable. There is no need to check
"Use this device....." if you do not have set nor use hardware profiles.
Click the Resources tab to check for any I/O or IRQ conflicts.
Click once on the topmost listed resource and look in the lower box which will
display any conflicting resources or "no conflict".
Press the down arrow key on the keyboard to step thru each resource looking for
any conflict.

If your device is not listed in the category mentioned in above line3, then you
need to reinstall the drivers for the device. Go to the device manufacturers
site for the latest updated drivers, download and install them per the
manufacturers instructions.

If your device is not listed and you have a device listed in Unknown, it may be
your sound device although it may very well be another device. Update the driver
for the device by opening its Properties > Driver tab > Update Driver button.

If you are not sure of the manufacturer/make/model of your sound device,
download/install/run the Free EverestHome to help identify your devices:
http://www.lavalys.com/products.php?lang=en

If you need further help in determining the proper drivers for the device,
please post any information on:

Manufacturer/Make/Model of your machine.

Manufacturer/Make/Model of your Motherboard.

Manufacturer/Make/Model of your sound device.

And yet they are not the ones responding to the posts. If posters wish to
include attachments, that's their choice. The many that do help in the ng's will
not open any attachment, no if's and's or but's about it, and if there isn't
enough or any info on the problem, they opt out and that's their choice.

I was not rude nor did I attack the OP, I simply forwarned about the
implications of posting attachments when not requested. I have mentioned it in
the past and will continue to do so in the future, all in the better interest of
those that need help.

What's possible and what's sensible are two different things. Posts with

I reply and help posters and I don't care if they post attachments. That is as long as the
post and the associated attachment is On Topic.

No one said you were rude Brian. I merely qualified your post. Remember a picture is worth
a thousand words and there is nothing worse than getting invomplete information on the first
post and having to ask for more information. Sometimes getting further information can be
like pulling teeth.

There is no need to reply, you have made your point.

Putting aside "post and the associated attachment is On Topic", how do you
determine the attachment can be safely opened? What if it's a new virus put out
that has not yet been detected or if it has, new defs for it aren't distributed
yet? Could be, not saying it is, a disaster waiting to happen.

I didn't imply anyone said I was, I was merely clarifying the context in which
I responded.

I merely qualified your post. Remember a picture is worth

That's something we all understand, all to well!

>
> There is no need to reply, you have made your point.

Actually there is one more. The many who go to ng's for help, are not as well
versed in areas that those of us who help are. More than likely many check thru
topics that appear to match their situation or one of interest. They may think
they're safe in an MS ng and happily click on any attachment, and as we all
know, viruses are planted here albeit not very long, and all it takes is one
unsuspecting user to execute it and they're in deeper doodoo than what they
originally came for.

I will now 86 this dialect ping pong.

Try as suggested, get the latest updated drivers from the manufacturers site.
Make sure you have the proper ones for the device installed.
Boot to Safe Mode and remove any/all sound devices in DM, close out and reboot.
Windows will redetect the device. Do not let Windows install the drivers,
instead install the updated drivers per the manufacturers instructions, or if
you have the files in a folder, point/browse the Hardware Install Wizard to that
folder as the place to get the files to install the drivers.

The reason for booting to Safe Mode is that it can/will show duplicates of
devices that were either installed more than once or corrupted ones that led to
reinstalling the device drivers. Also the reason to remove any/all.

If none of the foregoing solves the problem, you might try the Windows 98
Troubleshooter, which has a fairly effective routine for no sound and has
bailed me out of a corrupted DLL situation at least once before.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2Fsupport%2Fwindows%2Ftshoot%2F Default.asp

However, I just clicked the link above, which I had bookmarked to take me
there, which it did, but clicking the link on the page yielded "The
Requested Web Page is Not Available". Perhaps we need a Troubleshooter
Troubleshooter?
