I was bound to do do it sooner or later; I guess today was the day.

I d/l the latest AVG DB yesterday and it started a sequence of bugger-ups
involving my startup items. The latest consequence is the loss of my
Display settings ... I mean, really lost. Even the options that appear in
Control Panel => Display don't even seem to be quite the same. It is almost
as if I am looking at an earlier, simpler, edition of W98.

Is there a way to retrieve/ restore my settings to what they were a couple
of days ago?

Hi rooster,

Did you try doing a restore of a previous registry as was recommended by
those who replied to your previous post?

Mornin' Folks;

PATTIE
Sorry for the repeat post. My connection to ng's is a bit wonky. An Error
Alert is stuck where "Checking Newsgroups" icon is supposed to be.. I have
to reboot in order to Refresh the page; hence, I thought my OP hadn't
posted.

GALEN (aka Mycroft)
Thanks for the tip. It seems to me I went 'round that way before and that I
wasn't able to make it happen for some reason. I know I don't have a backup
boot disk and I really wanted one ... I'll have to check back through my
Discussion Group files to see what the hitch was.

HAGGIS
I'll give that a try. I did a flurry of boots since the problem occured; a
"Clean Boot" à la Terhune, and several attempts to straighten out the
mumbletypeg game AVG is playing with my Startup Items. I want to check with
you before I get into MS-DOS (unfamiliar territory to me).

I'm wondering if all the reboots might have affected the; "four files dating
back 4 days." which you indicate I should find when I reboot into MS-DOS?

I am very curious to know what it is I am seeing. After sleeping on it, the
display resembles what I see when I am in Safe Mode, with limited colour
options, lots of grey, stark window frames... even the icons are a bit more
primitive .... although I can still connect to the internet. What the
dickens is it?

No problem. I wasn't sure if you had seen the responses or not, or if you
had met with no success after trying the solutions posted and chose to
repost instead of replying to the original thread.

I am thinking that, perhaps, your video adapter drivers have somehow been
blown away. Open Device Manager and then double-click on Display
adapters........what does the subentry under Display adapters read? If it's
something like "Standard VGA", then you'll need to reinstall the drivers for
your video card.

Hi Pattie;

Sounded like a good suggestion.

The Sub Entries read:
Cirrus Logic5446PCI
"Working Properly",
"Exists in all hardware Profiles".

Oh well; lets hope my new PC arrives today.

It definitely looks like your video adapter driver is intact. Have you tried
changing the Settings in your Display Properties (eg., change Colors to True
Color 32 Bit and change Screen area to 800x600 or 1024x768)?
