Confused

[Elaine]

I cannot figure out if i am having a software problem or
a hardware problem. Whenever i startup, i cannot get to
my desktop before my monitor turns itself off, all by
itself, even if i havent touched a key or my mouse. I
have tried everything i can think of, i have ran a
reinstall of windows but the monitor wont stay on long
enough for me to see if it has worked. the monitor will
stay on as long as i am running the reinstall but the
moment it is finished it turns itself off again and the
LED light goes from green to amber, as if its in standby
mode. I am really not sure what to do here, thinking of
just throwing it away but i would really hate to have to
do that if i can fix it. any help is welcome. Thank you.

I have tried but not much happens. I cannot seem to get
it into safe mode, all i can do is go to the BIOS. I have
tried Fdisk-ing it and Format C: and still it keeps
turning off the moment windows seems like its starting.

Check the cables and connections to make sure none have become loose and they are
fully seated. If you have access to another monitor, try it to see if you have the
same problem.
See if holding down the F5 key after the mem count during POST gets you to Safe
Mode.

Hi, I had this happen to me a few weeks ago I booted up one morning and just
a windows started to load the monitor switched of as if in standby mode.
Anyway I done a c: scanreg /restore and restored the registry to a previous
date before the fault occurred and that cured it :) Still don`t no what
caused it though.

How would i go about doing a C:scanreg/restore? How did
you do so if your monitor is blank? I am still at a loss
here. All my cables are in, no pins are bent, i cannot
figure it out. I have only had the computer for three
years its not old enough to be dying on me yet!

Sounds like corrupted drivers, possibly on the PM side of it.

Boot the computer to DOS by holding down the CTRL key just after the memory count
during POST before the Windows screen appears. Release the key after you see the
Startup menu, select DOS Command Prompt.
At the prompt type below and press Enter:

scanreg /restore **note the space between scanreg and /.

Select a date prior to when your problem began. If you have booted on more than 5
succesive days then you will not have a registry backup old enough. Windows creates a
new reg backup each new day the machine is started. If you are able to restore an
older registry, when completed at the prompt type: win and press Enter to reboot to
Windows.

Not true, all new autos don't last their life expetency either. Had you tried any of
the suggestions I posted other than checking the cables? If so, what happens when you
do?

In addition to faulty drivers, you may have a damaged
video card. Consider buying a new one that fits your style
and budget if you plan on keeping the computer with the
problem. If your a casual computer user doin basic stuff,
go for a low-end ATI or Nvidia based card like ATI ATI
Radeon 9700 or GeForce FX 5200 (or lower to a GF2 or
somthin cheap). A worker, get one dirt-cheap, but from a
company that you know will supply reputable drivers:).
Like new, advanced games or video editing, get a med/high-
end ATI or Nvidia Chip like an All in Wonder 9800 pro or
GFFX 9850 (dont think you would need a Quadro).

Well now it has been more than a week of rebooting and
restarting and trying anything i could. I finally got the
thing to stay on long enough for me to reinstall windows
but i cannot get it to stay on longer than about four
minutes at a time but at least now i can get to a screen.
I have been trying to do a disk clean up but it keeps
telling me there is an error found and i cannot continue.
I've tried defragmenting but that doesnt get very far
before it all turns off again. I just cant understand what
to do. I remember you asking what kind of drivers i have
but i dont know how to find that out or what to do after i
do figure that out.

Can you now boot to Safe Mode without the problem of the monitor shutting off?
Try pressing and holding down the F5 key just after the mem count during POST boot,
it should go straight to Safe Mode.

I can get into safe mode but still the monitor wont stay
on very long. It just turns right off after about three
or four minutes, as if someone has put it into standby
mode. if its a windows problem then how do i fix it? or
can i?
