When I start Windows 98, the text and icons on my desktop
are much too large. I have tried everything I can think
of from the Settings and Display menu. Nothing works.
Almost by accident, I discovered that if I start a game
which I downloaded from MSN Games (and paid for), when I
exit the game, the text and icons on the desktop are
restored to their correct size. It works, but it's
inconvenient. How do I get them to appear in the correct
size when I start up?

Right-click a blank part of the desktop and choose Properties and then
Settings. Move the screen area slider one notch to the right (larger screen
area). A larger screen area means that icons and text are smaller. If this
is not the change you are looking for, post back with a more detailed
description of the problem.
