I am using BT Yahoo Narrowband on a 300Mhz machine with
32MB RAM. I am in the UK, London, dialing up to both a
freeserve 08450 number and a BT 08457 number. I have a US
robotics external 56 k modem with the latest driver from
the us robotics website installed. With an old driver I
used to be able to surf the net but only at 33 kbps. I
upgraded the driver, and can connect at 42 kbps (V.90 or
thereabouts). I can "get in" (as in my password is
accepted and I can log onto the network and get the green
televisions icon flashing in the system tray) but I cannot
open a single web site, or download any mail! There is no
firewall installed (as this is a fresh install of Win
98). I found the DUN 1.4 patch on the BT Yahoo Narrowband
CD, which I installed.

Is there some kind of TCPIP problem or something? I
removed IPX/SPX,I removed NetBeui, and rebooted etc.
TCPIP is installed and set to automatically detect
settings.

I cannot even run the "wizard" on the BT yahoo disk, as it
needs to connect to BT's secure server, and is unable to
do so apparently.

Please has anyone experienced this before, and can they
help me / suggest anything? We have managed to connect
before upgrading the modem driver, but surely the fact
that authentication is possible indicates that the problem
is not the internet connection, but the protocols.

Please offer any advice if you are able to,

Thanks

Gwyn

The problem was a combination of:

1) disabling the log on to network feature of the DUN
connection
2) uninstalling a poorly configured Sygate personal
firewall
3) reinstalling TCPIP and
4) Installing Client for Microsoft Networks.

Well, one of these fixed it, but I don't know which one!
1) enabled the log in process to be much quicker though
and was on a MS support site I found through google
somewhere. I could have sworn there was no firewall, but
then it is not my machine!

Cheers
Gwyn
