Corrupt or damaged files

It appears that several software programs have become
corrupted. Viewing the files in Windows Explorer, all of
the subdirectories are labeled with random characters
like: #|XbgH*^ or 9Trg!`> or )-kUXyw. I cannot delete
the folder - it displays an error. I also tried to use
the MS-DOS prompt and remove them with the del command;
however, I Could not access the folder.
This has just recently occurred and I'm not sure what
caused it as it appears to have affected three (3)
programs. I ran a Scandisk with no problems, then a
Defrag. The Defrag indicated that it could not complete
as there was a need to run Scandisk. Ran Scandisk and no
errors.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Run scandskw.exe. Click "Advanced" and make sure it is set to check for
invalid file names. Might help, might not.

Are you up-to-date on virus definitions, not that I know for sure that
is the problem? The following may be tough to do...

...., but it's what he calls a "formal" scan, as it removes Windows from

Yes - up to date Virusscan as well as Ad-Aware Scan. No
problems. Ran Scandisk again. Took several hours and
indicated it had fixed all errors. The programs no longer
are found under thier directory - C:\Program Files. Two
of the programs were under the directory of Broderbund
and the other was a Sierra program. Not sure what
happended. I now have numerous files ending in .chk as
well as numerous directories named File*. I'm assuming
this is a result of the Scandisk and can be deleted.
Correct?

Right. Those are what has become of stuff Scandisk "fixed". If you are
booting, THAT is a good sign. Could be everything in those files is
something you can do without, will regenerate if needed, were only
settings. Do Broderbund & Sierra still work?

But here is what I usually post on that...

I must warn that Scandisk may not do a great job when there is a
great one to do...

Therefore, perhaps UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on it's front
screen. It will then ask whether you want each error fixed. If it sounds
truly horrible, say "No!", and post the log. The log will be
"C:\Scandisk.log". Do not let it constantly restart, either.
(When running Scandisk in DOS, there won't be such a box to uncheck. You
must do it in "C:\Windows\Command\Scandisk.ini", per cquirke's advice.)
REALLY, in light of all THAT, the BEST thing to do is to have a full
system backup to run to! Would you like my list of backup apps?
