Hi, I`ve upgraded to AVG 7.0.300 free and it checks for updates
automatically every day when I start the computer. Is it posible to turn
this feature of ? I`ve looked in Updates Manger and can`t find any options
to do this.
Thanks
Kim

double click the tray icon
select scheduler
click scheduled tasks
edit the update task

without regular updates you do not have virus protection,
even once a day may not be often enough
such changes are entirely at your (very considerable) risk

Hi Kimbo,
Yair, I don't like automatic updates of things either. Open AVG Test =
Centre-on tool bar click 'service' - 'schedule update' unbolt =
"periodically check for Internet updates" This doesn't disable virus =
protection, when an update is needed the AVG icon in the systray goes =
greyscale, instead of coloured and a dialogue shows (when the pointer is =
held over it) to get the latest virus database. This version of AVG took =
a bit of configuring to get right, but when set up, you hardly know its =
there!!

Thanks Bob I got it now. I do check for updates almost daily but the kids
come in and turn the comp on and this thing pops up which they understand
less than I.

More of a reason to keep it enabled, especially if your kids spend time on
the net accessing gaming sites, many of which yet not all, are transporters
for viruses and spyware/adware. Without the most recent updates your
computer is open to the newest viruses that you have not yet aquired the
defs for. Although true that if it is a new virus that has not been included
in the av's defs yet anyone is open to infection from it, I don't see the
point in disabling auto updates for av apps especially when you have an
added mix of kids on the net. If you checked Symantec's site each day, you
will see at least one new threat per day if not more.

IMO you should explain to the kids exactly what the auto update is all
about and why it is essential that definitions are kept up-to-date. By doing
so and if you so choose to disable the auto update, perhaps you can get them
to run a manual update first before going anywhere else online. At least in
this manner your def's will be updated fully and you have a slimmer chance
of that one click that creates havoc.

Thanks for all your replies, I guess you`re right and i`ve turned it back
on. After all it`s only a click of the mouse and I know I have the latest
defs.
Thanks again
