Printer crashes computer

Just within the past couple of days my computer has been crashing when I've
started up the Canon i560 printer, which is a USB-connected device. It seems
to be all right if I turn it on first thing and leave it on, but if I turn
it on when there are other operations going, that's when it crashes - say a
50-50 chance in that situation. I've been using the printer with no problems
until now for about three months, in fact it's a nice piece of hardware.

MSCONFIG Start-Up, which I keep absolutely as lean as possible, shows two
new checkmarked entries that were not there until recently: One is "stimon".
The other is "Symantec NetDriver Monitor". On Feb 1, '05 Norton '03 created
a new folder under Program Files: "SymNetDrv" with one 94kb file in it:
"SNDMon.exe".

The Start-up folder in the Start menu shows neither of these.

1. I know it's not spyware, but how did stimon just materialize in MSCONFIG
Start-Up after these many months, and can I (and should I) get rid of it?

2. Norton is supposed to stop supporting '03 this year. What the hell are
they up to, downloading new apps for it in February? Can I get rid of this?

I mention all this as fodder for the main issue, which is how can I get the
printer to stop crashing the computer.

I kicked Norton and Stimon out of the starting lineup. Doing a lot of
printing lately, so I should know pretty quickly whether the crash problem
has gone away, and will post back if the problem continues. If there are any
caveats after the fact about removing these items, please do post them.

STIMON is the still image monitor. It's responsible for providing
interactive facilities related to cameras and scanners. You can easily do
without it. NORTON hasn't worked well with W98 for several years now, an I
don't recommend it. However, you should have some AV protection installed.

While I am not aware of any connection between these applications and USB
printer problems, it's generally true that the simpler you can keep things
the less likely you are to have problems.

Spam, spyware... isn't that stuff that gets on your computer even though you
