Noisy HDD

Hi all,
I think I may have mentioned this prior but due to increase in
frequency I am bringing it up again.
My hard drive is making a sort of 'knocking sound' but Only at the
beginning & end of a download from the internet.
Is this something that is 'normal' at times or something a little more
sinister.
I do understand that like spark-plugs, things need replacing; What
I dont understand is the 'knocking' only occuring as mentioned.

Hi gary,
I have had the sides off of the box for around two weeks now..
(ever since i had that prob' with the fans etc) and it is definately
coming directly from the hard-drive.
It is sort of like a "knocking" sound from within the hard-drive unit,
it knocks about 4 times as download starts and similar when it
finishes............. odd wouldnt you say?
Apart from that, comp is running fine.
Also, the downloads themselves reach their destination without
a hitch at all.

Did you ever run the manufacturer's diagnostics on the drive, Jane? I don't
remember from your other posts if you ever did. Also, how old is the drive?

Yup. Still trying to rescue the wife's XP system. Keep running into
snags. I was lucky in that she had it installed on FAT32. I could use a
Win98 system to copy off the bad disk to a good one (that I stole from
my system--part of a RAID array that went bad several months ago that I
never got around to repairing, switching to a 250GB Maxtor
"temporarily".)

But then, I was Unlucky in that the "Restore" disks for that system
aren't standard installation disks and wouldn't do a decent Repair of
the system (actually, I learned that on the 13th, and swapped the drive
to another machine I have in reserve), so I'm trying an MSDN disk.
Unfortunately, I have a DVD subscription, and the DVD drive in that
system is too flaky to effect a complete Repair install. So, I tried
copying the files to the HD, only remembering about the time the copy
finished (after an hour) that you can't run XP setup from a DOS prompt.
So now, I'm making another installation CD from an ISO image....

And the beat goes on... (It's actually kinda nice to have a quiet
house--Wife is asleep with five poodles snuggled up against her,
daughter is finally asleep after a day of flu-like symptoms, and even
the big dog outside my window, on the porch, isn't going off at every
passing car and homeward-bound drunk like he usually does.)

I didn't choose the FAT32 install. It came that way. And my wife doesn't
let me touch her system or even tell her what to do--until she gets into
trouble.

If it had been an NTFS system, I still would have chosen a Win98 system
to work from, but I would have used R-Studio to snag the files instead.
With FAT32 and Win98 Copy, I avoided the delays inherent in reading a
screwed up drive at low level--reams of log stating that "after ten
tries, disk couldn't be read starting at 43445568907" or whatever. Win98
is blissfully unaware of such garbage and is also nice enough to not try
to write anything to the disk.

Had three calls from clients, yesterday, with odd hardware problems,
always accompanied by signs of virus. Had to tell them to get in line

I read in a Dan Gookin (or whatever his name is)book that he had a hard drive that made a hell of a lot of noise just before it conked out. But to be honest mine can often be quite noisy. I have two fans inside the system unit and a long side with various programs running it can get quite noisy so unless it sounds like a plane taking off I wouldn't worry about it.

No, cant say that I have ever run manufacturers diagnostics.
Went to Western Digitals site once with details from my sales-slip,
but couldnt find my drive. I will have to poke around inside the box
and find more info then go to the site again.
The drive would be about 4 years old.
My sales slip states it is:::
"W/Digital 40gig IDE ATA/100 HDD".

IIRC you can by accessing the i386 folder, I believe I did it once this way
after copying 1386 to a drive:
Boot with a 98 boot disk
Change to the drive that has i386
Change to the i386 folder
Type in winnt
The Setup should begin.

I know I saved an article on this and will take a quick peek to locate/post
it.

Get Everest Home Edition, a system diagnostics program that is free and
quite comprehensive. It will display your entire system's hardware and
software configuration, including the make, model, and serial number for
your hard disk.

After you install and run it, then return to the WD site to obtain the
proper utilities. Hope this helps.

The WD diagnostics will cover a large range of drives, so you won't
necessarily find your drive mentioned. Just choose the one that looks most
likely. You can base it on the size of the drive, as that roughly indicates
the age.

Well, I'm beyond that now. But I'll try to remember for next time.
Finally got hardware and everything else squared away, with some nice
new errors (to me) for me to remember when I migrate to XP Support, <g>.
Now I'm installing SP2--6th try. Looks like it's going to work this
time, knock on wood...

If I'd only been more persistent in convincing The Boss to let me do a
complete reinstall from scratch, I'd be right about where I am now,
except I'd know the score! (Of course, her point is that she wouldn't
know her machine--and since she's the family accountant, besides being
The Boss, I'm not going to argue with her!)

I use various diagnostic programs on my pc and it does not make it any less noisy. If anything it gives the hard drive something to be noisy about.

flow of air from the fan(s). It may be true, as I ran that way for over
a month, wanting to do something in there I never ended up doing. I
THINK I may have noticed freezing activity before I finally closed the
box. (But I do not recall noisiness.)

Anyway, better get the diagnostic software. (Also, Scandisk/Defrag
sounded sensible. But you did that often enough.)

Yes, I reckon I have Defrag etc on a reasonable schedule, along with other
sensible measures.
Hey, guess what PCR, the flippin' fan is just as noisy too now as it

Anyway, the sides have been off ever since that day. We havent had
any hot weather worth mentioning either since then.
I have also left the sides off for familiarisation of inner components
due to my computer course coming up in the near future at the time.
(its here now and boy is it intense from day one.........!)(am loving it).

I mentioned in earlier post that I heard a friends HDD today, it sounded
sort of similar. His side was off too.
I had better run the diagnostic tool from W/D before I continue thread,
got to eliminate things first.

That is what it did to me. I used the software that came
with my most recently-purchased drive on an earlier-purchased drive,
and it balked, telling me that I needed an earlier version.

You dont have to use that version. You can start at
http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n
and make your own selection based on the actual drive
that you are trying to diagnose.

It may be good. Or, it may be that the head actuators
are weakening and your drive is that much closer to failure.

Or there may be nothing wrong with the drive,
and it will not fail for months or years.

Nobody knows.

A drive could get a clean bill of health today,
and be dead tomorrow.

You are both shortening the life of your electronic components.
Heat is the top threat, as it is always present, and therefore
poses more of an immediate threat than power surges or static.

"DiskAction" reports the last 12 processes that access any partition. It
discovered the MS Critical Update Notification Tool was accessing my
HDD every five minutes. It can be uninstalled in "Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs". Then, occasionally, "START, Windows Update" on
your own.

"BHOCop" found a Browser Helper Object called Wavehelper Class, created
by "Wavetop", that was building a monstrosity of an error log called
"Logit.txt" in here. "START, Find, F/F, Logit.txt"-- see one?

Now, my hard drive is quieter than my mouse. (Of course, I now also have
384 MB RAM, up from an initial 64, eliminating Swap File activity.)

I noticed that most of the guys/people who have been
kind and generous to me are actually in this thread at
the moment, as such I am putting pen to paper.

It seems I have taken on way too much "to do's" for me to
accomplish all of the replies I have to many questions/posts I
have made in the last week.

What I am saying is, It is going to take me at least a week to follow
up on all advice given and sites graciously posted.
Please dont any feel I am not following up on any advice if you dont
see a reply or post, it just means I am getting a little snowed-under
(ha ha, in oz in february ), I am feeling the pinch already with just
3 college classes. (separate topics) (plus family) (no puppies though)

PCR, although the post you are helping with is getting a little further
back now, it will remain as paramount as all other questions I have
asked about recently.

anyone know of a good maid service that works for gratis? (I take
that back, ian actually made us all a very good meal tonight)

on wednesday....... they want $84 just for one study book, and
not a single page is laced with gold, and thats just one of three
topics I am taking. (check your aussie newspapers soon, you just
may hear of "jane the bank-robber")

Well, I paid $50.00 for "Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub). BUT,
that one is 1207 huge, & I read it 1½ times, roughly. I don't regret it,
but the book is in sore need of a Defrag! It did come with a CD. Don't
mention any of this to Colorado!
