Device File

[Boojum]

After uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling MSN last night, this morning I
was presented this message when loading Windows:

Cannot find the device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows
application.

The Windows Registry or STSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the
device file no longer exits. If you deleted this file on purpose, try
uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with the device file,
try reinstalling the application to replace the missing file.

Device File: Javasup.VXD

The only things I did on purpose were the uninstalling of Firefox, and the
reinstalling of MSN 9. The system file checker did not find a corrupt or
missing file. The IE6 SP1 repair tool did not fix the problem. A scanreg /fix
to repair the registry did not help. a scanreg /restore was equally
unhelpfull. I uninstalled and reinstalled the MSN and Sun java virtual
machine. I have the same Java software now that I used without a problem two
days ago.

Another problem that has cropped up involves script errors during pasting of
information copied from other sites into email.
Operating System Windows 98 SE (4.10.1034.2222)
Internet Explorer 6.00.2800.1106
MSN Client 9.10.0009.2900
Default E-mail Program MSN Explorer
Amount of Memory 319 MB
Free Disk Space C: 7.95 GB

Unless someone has a fix, I intend to reinstall the operating system. Any
ideas?

The file is in Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Force reinstalling IE
should do the trick, since MS is no longer distributing JVM updates.
Start out just as if you were going to run IE Repair, but instead,
choose "Add Components". Put a check mark by the Virtual Machine entry
and go. Actually, I'd put check marks beside every bolded item that
permits it (won't permit it if the version you have now is newer than
the version that came with that particular IE installation.)

Otherwise, you could simply uninstall Virtual Machine and let Sun Java
handle those chores.

Gary I have heard a lot of complaining in the XP general newsgroup about how
poor Sun Java is compared to MJM. People have said that some programs need
Microsoft Java Machine and will not run with Sun's version. Is there any
truth to these arguments as far as you know?

Thank your, Mr. Terhune for your help. I forced the ID reinstall and followed
with uninstalling MSN Virtual Machine. The problem persisted. Nonetheless, I
reinstalled
Microsoft Virtual Machine version 5.00.3805, and then Microsoft Virtual
Machine version 5.00.3809 and Microsoft Virtual Machine 5.00.3810, which are
Security Fixes for version 5.00.3805. The problem has been fixed.

In the past, I had unstalled all Microsoft Virtual Machine files, only to
experience problems and have to reinstall. This time, I allowed the problem
to persist by installing version 5.00.3810 alone. For these reasons, I
believe the time has yet to arrive when the Sun Virtual Machine only will
suffice as the only java software needed, at least with respect to Windows 98
SE.

YW, Boojum. I would have instantly suggested a VM update installation or
two, but couldn't assume that you would be able to find one, or that you
may have already had one in storage. I find it interesting that the VM
installation in IE Setup didn't fix the issue. Particularly when another
VM installation fixed it, I'm at a loss to understand why the IE Setup
version didn't.

Perhaps it has to do with Microsoft slowly phasing out its support of
Microsoft Java Virtual Machine in favor of Sun's version. I think the date
Microsoft Java Virtual Machine will expire is December 2007 but I no longer
have the website to it bookmarked. Perhaps PCR or someone else knows the
site.
