It's in the Windows Setup tab of Add/Remove Programs. I think it's even
it's own item, not a part of the Multimedia subset.

The only two entries which don't have a sub-menu,
activated via the Details button, on my machine right now
are Address Book and Web TV For Windows

Even though the KB specifically states that WMP
is listed under Add/Remove Programs, it isn't always.

It MAY be listed, or, if you are a good little camper
with a fully updated computer - aren't we all -
then what may be listed instead is
"Windows Media Player system update 99 series"

If you click on that and select Add/Remove,
you get a warning message stating that
"You are about to rollback Windows Media Player 9 Series
to the original version of Windows Media Player
that was part of your version of Windows.
Do you want to continue?"
You also get Yes and No buttons to choose from.
[That's as far as I took it.]

I'm futzing with various machines at the moment,
so I may try the Yes button eventually to see if it will
offer me the opportunity to uninstall the original,
[which I highly doubt.]

In an original install of Win98, it doesn't appear in Add/Remove
Programs, it's in Windows Setup. If not on the root, then inside
Multimedia subset. Or is that only SE?

I don't know about 98 Gold. I've never used it.

I'm running 98 SE, and it isn't in Windows Setup.

It isn't in the Root, and it isn't buried behind
a Details button.

I checked them all. It simply isn't there.

Strange as heck. I coulda sworn that some version of WMP was included.
MSKB is absolutely useless on the subject, as usual.

Guess I'll have to load them up some day soon. With all the fur that's
been flying around this house these days, might be a relaxing change of
pace. Everything's being cantankerous--computers, children, dogs,
weather... I'm about to join the crowd!

You are correct.

It is INCLUDED in the Windows Setup PROCESS.
You just don't get any say in the matter.
Just like IE. It doesn't list that either.

You get IE, like it or lump it, and you get WMP, also lioli.

I found one KB article which said that it is listed in Add/Remove.
But it was written before the spammers became the scum of the earth.

Maybe the new Longhorn kernel source code will cheer you up.

#include <windows.h>
#include <system_errors.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

char make_prog_look_big[1600000];

main()
{
if (detect_cache())
disable_cache();

if (fast_cpu())
set_wait_states(lots);

set_mouse(speed, very_slow);
set_mouse(action, jumpy);
set_mouse(reaction, sometimes);

printf("Welcome to Windoze 3.999 (we might get it right \
or just call it Chicargo)\n");

if (system_ok())
crash(to_dos_prompt);
else
system_memory = open("a:\swp0001.swp", O_CREATE);

while(1) {
sleep(5);
get_user_input();
sleep(5);
act_on_user_input();
sleep(5);
if (rand() < 0.9)
crash(complete_system);
}
return(unrecoverable_system);
}

Hugh, is this the reason why there was a justice department action against
Microsoft in regards to bundling IE with Windows 98 and/or 98SE. Also, I
remember there was a recent European Union Antitrust problem towards
Microsoft and Microsoft agreed to ship a version without the Windows Media
Player built in. It makes me wonder if anyone will buy this lite version of
Windows without the included Windows Media Player.

Installed as part of Win98SE is WMP 6.01.05.0217 or 6.01.05.0130,
depending on where you look.

He, I think you hint on where you might find WMP 6.4 in Add/Remove
Programs here.

Different versions of WMP 6.4.x are distributed as part of the various
IE 5.x and IE 6.x software bundles. I don't have any of these these
bundles installed on my Win98SE at the moment. But from memory, in the
A/R-P list you find something like '(ms) IE (5or)6 and Internet Tools'.
Running that, choose 'Custom install', żisn't WMP (6.4) listed there as
an optional component to (un-)install?

If one can uninstall/reinstall it from in there, as the OPs ram & divi
desired, or if a repair-install of this whole IE-bundle fixes the WMP
nostart problem, 'they' should then check if 'they' also needs to
reinstall the security updates for WMP that exists.

I'd guess that WMP 7.x or 9.x, if installed, will be shown in the list
at the base-level, but not 6.x. Not sure, but that's my guess.

Same code they start with for every new revision of the Win[NT] OS,
żain't it? Gotta help the HW manufacturers push their new stuff.

LOL, It makes you wonder if Microsoft ever intends to have that maintenance
operating system come out for the NT source code and do away with the DOS
emulator.

In '98 media player was under multimedia in Windows setup. Real Player was
in Windows setup under Internet and also in add/remove. After that if you
chose mp in full IE setup , you could uninstall or reinstall from there. The
next one from Windows went into A/R and was Windows Media Player. From
mpfull-tiger to WMP 7.1.
My 98se was oem so don't know default, as Musicmatch, Real Player, blah-blah
were installed, but I found media player by choosing open-with. Then I
installed from IE and Microsoft. From my experience, I wondered what Real's
complaint was.

I was going to say something like that, having... "Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab, Microsoft Internet Explorer
6 SP1 & Internet Tools, Add/Remove button, bolt 'Add a component' click
'OK'"...

"Windows Media Player" is listed under "Multimedia Components". HOWEVER,
it's box is shaded. Attempt to select it, and...

"A newer version of the component you have selected is already
installed."

....Nothing more can be done. Also, indeed, WMP does not show up at the
"Windows Setup tab, Multimedia component". If ever it was there, it must
have been removed when the "newer component (was) installed". I do not
see it listed separately at the Install/Uninstall tab, either, but
only... "Windows Media Player system update (9 series)".

Possibly. Or you could uninstall that newer version first.

I have a virgin Win98SE installation, save a few hardware drivers, at
the moment and i don't have WMP under the Windows Setup tab. Just like
Hugh wrote.

> I do not
> see it listed separately at the Install/Uninstall tab, either, but

And here we see that you do have that newer version.

I'm not suggesting you try the following, i'm just thinking aloud;
- Will the WMP multimedia component in IE setup ungray so you can
uninstall it, if you uninstall the "Windows Media Player system update
(9 series)" first?
- Would the WMP multimedia component in IE setup not have been grayed
out, had one never installed a newer version of the component (i.e. WMP
7.x or 9.x)?

What you could easily check is searching your system and see what
versions of MPlayer2.exe exists, to see if there is any earlier versions
available (without extracting them from the original cabinette files)
that could be recommisioned during an uninstall of later WMP versions.

The original Win98SE MPlayer2.exe is 6.01.05.0130. There is also a
MPlayer.exe 4.10[.00].1998 installed on my fresh Win98SE install.

Hmm.

|
| I have a virgin Win98SE installation, save a few hardware drivers, at
| the moment and i don't have WMP under the Windows Setup tab. Just like
| Hugh wrote.

Unfortunately, so did divi write. He doesn't have one there. (But ram
may have.)

|
| > I do not
| > see it listed separately at the Install/Uninstall tab, either, but

|
| And here we see that you do have that newer version.

I guess, maybe. BUT, it doesn't quite say it is WMP9. It says it's an
update, kind of. Was I already WMP9 before I took the update? (Damn, I
can't quite recall.) If so, I presume I am still WMP9 after removing the
update.

|
| I'm not suggesting you try the following, i'm just thinking aloud;

That's a relief. Well, I guess, with my full system backup recently
refreshed, I could do it. Still!

| - Will the WMP multimedia component in IE setup ungray so you can
| uninstall it, if you uninstall the "Windows Media Player system update
| (9 series)" first?

I THINK I personally was up-to-date on my WMP versions. Certainly,
whenever one showed up at Windows Update, I took it. Therefore, it is
unlikely removing the WMP9 update (should it even get lower than WMP9)
would get me low enough for that box to activate at... "Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab, Microsoft Internet Explorer
6 SP1 & Internet Tools, Add/Remove button, bolt 'Add a component' click
'OK'".

So, I wouldn't try it, even if I didn't think it might be a ton of
trouble!

| - Would the WMP multimedia component in IE setup not have been grayed
| out, had one never installed a newer version of the component (i.e.
WMP
| 7.x or 9.x)?

I suppose, if it were there once, likely it would still be there, just
as you suspect.

|
| What you could easily check is searching your system and see what
| versions of MPlayer2.exe exists, to see if there is any earlier
versions
| available (without extracting them from the original cabinette files)
| that could be recommisioned during an uninstall of later WMP versions.

I have only mplayer2.exe v. 6.4.07.1121.

|
| The original Win98SE MPlayer2.exe is 6.01.05.0130. There is also a
| MPlayer.exe 4.10[.00].1998 installed on my fresh Win98SE install.

Maybe... provided only one newer version was taken, though, I suppose,
strongly.

That version is the one distributed with IE6 SP1 (and is possibly the
last 6.4 version of the exe available outside of M$).
It means that if it possible to uninstall WMP 6.4 back to the original
WMP 6.1 the uninstall would have to extract the original files from the
Win98SE cabinette files (after having uninstalled your WMP 9.x).

I'm not sure but i think that *update* in "Windows Media Player system
update (9 series)" could mean an update from 6.x to 9.x, instead of
meaning an update to your WMP 9.x (taking it from WMP 9.x.y to 9.x.z).

Two possibilities for WMP's absense in the Add/Remove Programs list.
1) If a person never installed WMP 7.x or 9.x it shouldn't exist there,
but an entry for WMP 6.4 (greyed out or not) would be found under the
"M$ IE (5or)6 SPx & Internet Tools" entry .. or nowhere at all if no IE
bundle have been installed.
2) If WMP 7.x or 9.x was installed it probably should exist an entry for
it in the Add/Remove Programs list, so something would be amiss. Well,
the OP(s) couldn't even start WMP so they certainly have other things
amiss with WMP, so could have WMP problems also in the Add/Remove
Programs list.

I suppose it to be unlikely MS would code an uninstall routine that way.
It would presume too much, that everyone has their Windows Installation
..cab's. There are no separate .cab's in my WMP folder...

C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player>dir *.cab /a /s
Directory of C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
File not found

Neither is there anything that appears to have "undo" files. (Yet, by
it's very presence in Add/Remove, "Windows Media Player system update (9
series)" has promised it WOULD go.)
