I have a registered Brother's Keeper genealogy program. Yesterday I
downloaded a free spyware scan and when I deleted it I must have screwed up a
file. Now when I try to open my Brother's Keeper genealogy program this pops
up "comdlg32.ocx or one of it's dependencies is missing or invalid" and I
can't open the program. I have searched for this .ocx file on my computer and
can't find it. Can anyone help me?

1. What was the "free spyware scan" program? If it's any good, it will
have an undo capability. In any case, you should tell us and allow us to
give feedback.

2. You could always try reinstalling the Brother's Keeper software.

3. Click here to have it reinstalled:

The above is coded to prompt a download from Microsoft that will
self-install. If that doesn't work, you have other protective settings
or utilities in place and we'll have to figure those ones out.
Protecting yourself from spyware, adware, and potentially risk ActiveX
controls (which is what an OCX file is)--that's a worthy venture. But
it's also easy to lock yourself out of desired functionality or even
shoot yourself in the foot if you go about it haphazardly or depend on
overly simplified utilities to do it for you.

Sorry, I screwed up that link I gave you. It won't do anything. I'll get
back to you with a replacement.

Download that file. Unpack it to a new folder, right-click the INF file
and "Install".

This replaces a post I "cancelled". It included a method I subsequently
discovered wasn't right. But then I realized that other important
information was also cancelled. So, here it is again, the way it should
have been to start with. My apologies for the confusion.

1. What was the "free spyware scan" program? If it's any good, it will
have an undo capability. In any case, you should tell us and allow us to
give feedback.

2. You could always try reinstalling the Brother's Keeper software.

3. Click here to have it reinstalled:
http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vb5/comdlg32.cab

Download that file. Unpack it to a new folder, right-click the INF file
and "Install". This is only a last resort, since I suspect there are
newer versions included in Windows and sometimes with the program you've
installed. Reinstalling "Brother's Keeper" might be a better method.
