View Full Version : Notepad On Start-Up

When my computer boots up to the desktop the notepad will open up with
the title 'desktop' and have the following in the notepad....

[ExtShellFolderViews]
Default={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}
{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}

[{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}]
PersistMoniker=file://Folder.htt

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0

I am not sure why it opens up and noting other than that seems any
different than oridinary. I can close the notepad and nothing
happens, no problems.

Anyone ever have this happen before ? And how can I stop it from
happening ? Other than being a small nuisance it isn't effecting my
system to my knowledge to close the notepad.

Thanks

Hi Gizmo,

Go to msconfig>Startup tab. Look for an entry that refers to Desktop.ini and
if found, click in the checkbox beside it to clear the checkmark. Click
Apply, OK, then restart.

Use Explorer to look in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and look for
a file with a filename extension .TXT (probably desktop.txt). You can delete
or move it.

There aren't any programs in that location....txt...or otherwise. I
used the suggestion above and that kept it from popping up on start up

Good deal! But that was only half the job. Now run MSCONFIG again,
re-enable the item, click OK, but *don't* reboot when prompted. Then run
MSINFO32. Expand "Software Environment" then click on "Startup
Programs". Find that same entry, then look for the notation that
accompanies it--"Startup Group", or "Machine Run", or "Per-User Run",
etc.

Report back with that info and we can tell you where the item is located
so you can *permanently* delete it. MSCONFIG is best reserved for
trouble-shooting, not long-term configuration. Ideally, you normally run
with "Normal Startup" selected in MSCONFIG.

Hi gary,
Please excuse the butt-in, but while msinfo32 is fresh including the
expanded software environment & start-up, could you tell me just
what System Hooks is? (directly under start-up)

I don't happen to know enough to explain that, Jane. Try Google.

Think of them as "Intercept Points".

Example:
Your virus scanner software will "hook" into the system
to intercept a mouse click so that it can execute
a subroutine to scan your email or a download file
for a virus before returning control to the operating system.

The operating system will then perform the normal function,
such as open the email or ask you where you want to save the file.

Hi Hugh,
Sounds fair enough.
Mine is empty, will it always be this way even though I have A/V?

regards Jane

I am somewhat surprised. It makes me wonder
if you have your A/V properly configured.

I'm not claiming that there is definitely something wrong.
Your A/V may have a different way of activating protection.

What A/V do you have?

Hi Hugh,
I have Norton but as far as I know I dont have a firewall unless one
came with it.
It does scan all incoming and outgoing mail though.
